Oh, cool. The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster Vintage White looks pretty neat. I'd love to try one. Their in stock locally. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime!

I got a Squier Mascis a couple months ago - only my second electric guitar after 30 years of being a Les Paul guy - and I absolutely love it. Some mods I'll do if I get the dough, for sure, but it blows away the Fender American Whatever I tried.VREEEEVROOOOOW wrote:Are there any cheap Jazzmasters that aren't just plain bad compared to the more expensive ones? I don't know much about Jazzmasters except that Kevin Shields, J. Mascis, & Taka use them (that's like all three styles of guitar playing I care about!), and I really like how nice they seem to be for tremolo picking, neck access, and for playing seated. And I'd love to have a guitar with a tremolo system.

the thing to know about the JMJM is that the pickups aren't proper Jazzmaster pickups which are characterized by a wide flat coil. the Mascis PUs are apparently a P90-esque coil under a Jazzmaster cover.

I guess I should find someone who can play Unseen Harbor by MONO flawlessly with the same fx & amp, but a JMJM instead of Taka's '90s JM, to hear if I can tell the difference.dubkitty wrote:the thing to know about the JMJM is that the pickups aren't proper Jazzmaster pickups which are characterized by a wide flat coil. the Mascis PUs are apparently a P90-esque coil under a Jazzmaster cover.

well, tbf the JMJM pickups aren't BAD per se...when they first came out i got to try out two with different pickups and preferred the stock pickups to the Fralins in the other, which were wimpy lower-output surf style things and pretty useless for much other than mid-60s beach music.

it's just that it won't "sound like a Jazzmaster." for an "authentic" Jazzmaster sound you'll need to swap out the pickups. but if you like them the stock pickups are totally adequate. and if you use enough effects nobody will be able to tell anyway

the all-time classic Mayor Daley pere malapropism...this was during the 1968 Democratic Convention riots, and he meant to say "...is there to preserve order." instead, he came up with one of the great anarchist statements of the 20th century completely by accident.
