Question about the Boss DD500

Post by Sonaboy »

Can the Boss DD-500 be programmed to imitate the strange tape flutter sound of the Echo Park?

I've been using the Echo Park for a few years now, and love the random flibber-flap sound that the Modulation knob does on the TAPE setting when playing ambient passages. But I'm getting pretty sick of that switch. I can't get it to work about half the time I step on it now.

Every other tape delay emulator I've tried doesn't do this type of thing, their wow/flutter control usually is just a slight chorus or flange effect.

But something like the DD-500 that has deep programming functionality seems like it might be possible to do this. Anyone ever looked into it?

Any clips showing it? I can give a shot and record it.

There's only one wow+flutter parameter in the DD-500 (Binson Echorec) but you can make a combination of knobs twist on any mode that can be either triggered at a certain time or by envelope, or footswitch.

this vid is pretty close around the 1:40 mark where the mod is maxed out. i set mine on the 1/3 beat mode, so maybe that one has an even more dramatic effect. as you can hear - it's this random SQUIG every few seconds.
The M9 doesn't really do it the same way - it sounds like artifacts, rather than a tape bump.

With the assign settings you can make all kinds of weird warbles. You can have a momentary change of delay time that is triggered by the footswitch or by your playing envelope or by an internal LFO. You can also trigger changes to the modulation depth similarly.

Got you, and yes, totally doable. For that specific sound I'd fuck with the delay time momentarily, but repeats rate might get out of sync. I don't think modulation depth or rate changes are harsh enough to get you that sound, but maybe a combination of both.
