New looper, how to sync to external click

Post by Bon Hoga »

Just bought a Digitech Jamman Stereo, a definite improvement over my old Akai Headrush. Now I need a device that my drummer can use to program click tracks (manually AND via a tap tempo switch), send click to his headphones (and control the volume) and send some kind of clock my Jamman to synchronise the loops with the click track. Would a cheap drum machine like the Alesis SR-16 be able to do all that?

IIRC the digitech loopers are using a failry complicated synch system.. Stereo cable required, so there's at least 2 signals being transmitted. We did some testing here and found that it didn't have much of a chance of working with things like the Korg volca/pulse sync, but maybe it speaks some kind of midi?

I've seen a video where a guy synced his JMS with a pocket metronome using some contraption he built, so there's got to be a way.

I had one of these for awhile but it didn't suit my purposes because I was syncing three jammans to a drum machine and you had to loop the jammans in a particular order. It might suit your purpose, however.

i'm gunna guess the digitech is looking for 9V pulses maybe?

whereas volca's/etc/etc almost all send 5V pulses. PO's and OP1 send 1V.

maybe the circuit is just amping the pulses up to a level that the digitech will respond to?
theres a schematic linked in the description. its just 2 transistors, a cap and a resistor.

Howdy, just curious but what do you like about the Jamman over the Headrush?

The Headrush is a lot simpler to use and has these wonderful delays, but the Jamman sounds better, has stereo inputs and outputs (major advantage as far as Im concerned) along with a bunch of other useful features, and is a lot more accurate, even without the quantisation. I love my Headrush, but the Jamman is a superior piece of kit, hands down.

Looks like it might work for me, but it costs almost as much as the Jamman :D

Hijacking the thread to vent my frustration why more companies haven’t just made MIDI standard on their loopers. If Akai and Line 6 redid the Headrush and DL-4, adding midi so the two could be synced together it would be a beautiful thing.

The device shown above has the Jam Sync out: does the JMS have the sync feature? I thought it was only the single sized loopers that came out after it that had that feature...

At this point it’s completely insane to me that simple loopers don’t have a midi sync option. I don’t care if it responds to CC messages or stop/play stuff. I just want it to sync.

Yeah, exactly.

I really think we should make one. The new ehx looper is like $600 and still not perfect, with all the talented builders on here I’m sure we can figure out all the features that we want for less than that.

We, as in ILF. I don’t personally know anything about building pedals.

You can use the footswitch jack.

You mean build a looper or build a sync device? I’m no expert or anything, but I think the latter would be more feasible.

TC ditto x4 syncs . . . .

This is the reason I went to Mobius. The only limit to how you sync and use it is your hardware. I now have a 16 input/output looper for about the cost of 3 or 4 new X4's
