To buy or not to buy?
Not a pedal question, but I found a made in Japan fender squire p bass at a local thrift store for $65 Canadian. It looks a bit banged up and has had the frets removed at some point, but otherwise is in decent shape. Should I buy it? I don’t know a ton about basses, but am in the market for one just to bang around on. Should I buy it or leave it?

Unless obviously fucked up (broken or beyond repair truss rod, twisted neck), I would put that as a buy, assuming the cash is no issue.

I’m going back to test it out, make sure the neck is ok and it’s not total garbage in general, and if it’s half decent i’ll probably pick it up.

oh hell yeah. if you use filler on the fret slots and then sand it down you'll end up with a lined fretless fingerboard...that's what Jaco Pastorius did with his Jazz Bass.

The neck had a pretty good bow to it and the electronics sounded pretty sketchy, so I passed on it.

I just went to a semi-local music store and they were selling a set of three 3" cables for $54 Canadian.Blood_mountain wrote:Not a pedal question, but I found a made in Japan fender squire p bass at a local thrift store for $65 Canadian. With tax, that comes to $61.02 (or to $61 if you pay in cash, since pennies only exist within the
digital realm in Canada anymore).
So... even if the neck and electronics were wonky, $65 for a P-body and tuners and strings might
have been worth it, especially if you were looking to totally refinish it into a Franken-P-bass monster.

Looks like a neck from Stratosphere is $170 so you're still in cheaper than a new Squier so I'd probably do it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to focus on other musical purchases that I don’t need instead!

That's definitely not how my gear regret works.BetterOffShred wrote:I believe the time has come and gone on this one fellas
I still vividly recall an incident from 17 years ago when I had $40 in my pocket and as I was
just about to leave a thrift store I saw a hollow-body electric guitar on the counter that
was on sale for $27. I didn't recognize the brand, but it looked to be in relatively good
condition and the natural finish on it (maybe maple?) looked pretty sweet. But for some
stupid reason I convinced myself to just keep walking because I already owned a guitar
and I needed to get some groceries and pick up some beer for the coming week.
The time for regret may have come, but it is never truly gone.

Yeah I regret a lot of gear I passed up at ridonk low prices when I worked at guitar center. Mainly amps .. Super Reverb for like $450.. back when Silverface stuff wasn't very sought after. .. Ah well

I don't regret not buying it. It will go to someone who needs it at that price more than I do and has the time to dedicate to getting it back into fighting shape!
