Gibson got too precious about maintaining prestige while dropping the quality floor that all the wankers who talked them up even after the point of dropping standards eventually had to concede that what they were asking for products nobody gave a shit about made no sense.

I'd like to note that it's likely for legal and financial purposes that they started doing that.
I imagine that after what was done to Gibson, Fender started making large strides to avoid having that shit happen to them, too.

Except I don't see other major companies changing away from it at all.

Strangle/rhythm circuits are often yanked out, though. Fender's just giving the people what they want (less bullshit+lower prices).
It's like saying that Gibson's downfall was facilitated by the fact that they don't have varitone switches in every guitar of theirs.

The "classic" models didn't have said Varitone.

Fender's taking some of this stuff away would be on par with Gibson just offering bridge buckers only on EVERYTHING unless you bought a RI.
