Chalice on bass - yet another Fuzzhugger surprise!

Post by jrmy »

So I got the chance to mess around with a Chalice today, and I have to say... Tom, you don't disappoint!

This is pretty damn interesting and versatile fuzz - more "tight" than "wooly," and capable of getting dying battery sounds, but without sounding overly buzzy or harsh in its medium (but plenty fuzzy) saturated settings (though you can certainly get harsh & supersaturated if that's what you're looking for). I took a little time and cooked up a demo mp3 (sigh, still no video capabilities), but it's a bit large to post here, so you can download it (please make with the right clicky + save) at: http://www.ellisonrocks.com/FHx_Chalicetest.mp3

For those interested in such things, my signal chain went: Fender Jazz bass > Fuzzhugger Chalice > M-audio Fast Track Pro. If people want, I can post the knob settings, but suffice it to say, I start out clean and play the same riff over and over, getting increasingly fuzzy/saturated until I just get sick of myself at the very end and try to get "down and funky" on a dying battery-ish setting. Needless to say, the real funk players of the world have nothing to worry about in terms of me being a musical threat.

The Chalice, on the other hand, is a serious weapon of mass fuzzstruction!

Yeah - I actually wasn't expecting to like it nearly as much as I do. As always, Tom is a mad genius!

Sounds PDG to me I like how it retains the basses original sound. The mild setting is about what I was thinking a good overdrive should do for a bass.

Yeah - when I first tried it, I went straight for the full-on distorto settings, but when I started messing around and dialing back, I was really surprised by the number of tones this little jobber was able to hit.

My ABsynth is a permanent board member, I've never heard anything like it, and I've paired it with the Phantom Octave. I wanted to get a Bloom as well, should I get a Chalice instead? I like the rich throatiness of the ABS so am mostly looking for something similar, but could use something that cleans up a little better. Someone help before my head 'splodes.

+1 to you good sir. My ABsynth is also a permanent member paired with the PO. The Bloom actually can get really clean btw. Like overdrive clean though the Chalice is really cool and it's circuit is nearly the ABsynth. In fact, for money saving purposes, after playing your absynth you'll be so drunk on fuzz that if you even look at the fuzzhugger homepage you'll try to rationalize why you need a Chalice for your ABsynth(e). :p
