I've decided my gain section this year is going to be the Malekko Downer into a Rainger FX Reverb X. I am excited by this decision.

Pretty rad decision. You should stick a Fuck after all of it for maximum gnarl.

I have been strongly considering the Mini...

I prefer the Mini, but the momentary switch on the Fuck is awesome.

You just have to decide if you want gated lo fi crud all the time or on a momentary switch. Also the extreme crackle on the Fuck is more dramatic than the Mini.

Low bias mini = gated kinda Velcro
Fuck crackle = broken compressor apocalypse

All of the demos I've seen sound completely different, which leads me to believe that it's either super super versatile or really finicky with the gear you hear. :idk: Which I guess fits with it being a wavefolder pedal. Also from what I see that adding exp control completely changes this pedal from a distortion to a multi-effects, which is fun.

Inconuucl: I can shoegaze that tune with 5 pedals.
other contestant: I can shoegaze that tune with 4 pedals.
Inconuucl: I can shoegaze that tune with 3 pedals.
other contestant: OK, shoegaze that tune!

It gets some good kinda chirpy phasing sounds (not phasing...just can kinda feel like it) based on amplitude. The nature of wavefolding is always related to.the amplitude, so it is highly influenced by picking, pickups, what's before it and all that stuff. It's a lot of fun, but it can be a bit hard to dial in sometimes. The sub is nice and gives some weird results at certain positions which bring out the moving character of the wavefolding more.

It's one of those pedals that kinda takes over and I don't really like with anything else so far.

Yeah, I really want to try it but I don't want to go out and buy it. LG, if you get tired of it and don't mind lending it to me before flipping it, holla at ya boy. I'm especially interested in trying it out with the Copilot Broadcast I have incoming.

Broadcast is one on the best utilities ever. Always finding places to put that guy.

The malekko is much better and more versitile than the old synthmonger I had.

I still think in some ways I like hard syncing a complex oscillator to the guitar and wavefolding the oscillator better. It's not perfect, but I got kinda neat results doing it (especially when preparin the guitar signal with logic and filtering). But two hundred versus whatever half a eurorack price is worth it if that's the sound.

Using the lfo out of the Moog ring mod into the wavefolding and then pushing it back in as a carrier...

I just got the Downer and I’ve used the Prunes & Custard for years. The Downer is rad and does indeed do what the Prunes & Custard does, but:
— On the plus side, it offers a low-pass filter, which is nice coz wavefolding can get shrill.
— On the minus side, the wavefolding comes after the pitch shifter, which introduces latency, so there’s a small-but-audible slap when Blend is around noon. This along with a slight detune makes for some cool ‘doubling’ sounds though, so while I wish it was just a P&C with a low-pass, it offers its own thing.
