Speaking of which: The MKII update to the Octatrack is almost entirely comsetic, thought there are a couple easier shortcuts/dedicated buttons, I guess. The functionality/capabilities are the same. So yeah, now that used OTs are like $800 and under, it makes these choices harder. It seems like the Digitakt is kind of an "Octatrack light" hidden in a foxy new box.
And yes I do want one.

I'm still working on the making sense part. Have had them for a grand total of 36 hours. A4 was fairly easy to get working instantly. Octatrack has a little bit of a learning curve.
I'll bring them to the foam party chez j'angle if you want to try it out.

Dude before you buy it for just that... It can't retrig external midi, at least with the current firmware. I was hoping that it could as well but basically it can only retrig internal samples, which is still super cool and a fun feature, but I was under the impression it could do midi as well. Fingers crossed for midi retrigs in 2.0, I mean it is a no-brainer right? Unless there is a problem with midi hardware receiving retrigs(freezing, etc.).
Can any of the Elektron boxes play unsynced loops?
Thinking of getting a sampler, but will most likely use it for drones, time stretched pianos etc, so to be able to have different length(and not in sync) loops/samples is a deal-breaker.
Yes, octatrack can. It has various sync setting including unsynced that can be changed per track instantly. It can also do unsynced but restart all loops once the master track plays x amount of times. You can also overdub onto any of the 8 tracks. And sample from other tracks.

I was pretty lost when going into the manual, youtube was the magic bullet.

Shit really? Fark you've saved me man.
Does anyone know if you can use conditional triggers on the octatrack's MIDI sequencer with he latest firmware?
If not, my other option is a CV to MIDI converter. Disting Mk4 does it with the MIDI breakout box but I'm petrified if I dip my toes into modular that I'll eventually diving all the way in....

I've proposed this move to my collaborator and wife on many occasions and suprisingly they always talk me out of it. Needless to say, I'll be eyeing your earnings and stroking my stubble.
