I can’t figure out why, but sometimes the negative effect on the sound is way worse than others. Like, I still want to hear all the quality of the music, just not be in pain after, and more importantly live to enjoy music another day.

I like the 3 cupped "hearos" or whatever the brand is. I have tiny ear canals and my ears are sort of weird due to repeated infections, so I can't comfortably fit most in near ear earbuds for music, but the hearos fit really well and are confortable. Way more definition than foam, more attenuation.
I am never around super loud music, so I find having just the tip( ) of the ear canal leads to the perfect amount of attenuation. Rarely are they all the way in.

Those foam ones are terrible.

I've heard ( ) good things about Hearos too, I use these
currently. There's a bunch of stupid marketing buzzwords in their copy, but I ignored it all, read a few reviews and bought some, turns out they're pretty good plugs for the money.

I swear I can hear every tv in the neighborhood turning on and off. Constant high-pitched frequencies. I’ve learned to tune them out, mostly. Bummer that this is just how it is now.

Been using earplugs for the last 10 years. Tried a few different brands. Think my last set is Etymotic. Still completely fucked up my ears by standing right in front of Unsane. Like 24 hours of LSD-like auditory issues, couldn't pinpoint where a sound was coming from, everything swirled around with echoes between each ear. It would have been cool if not nauseating.
Need new ear plugs.
(Edit: correction. Last set was Etymotic by looking at pictures, not Hearos)

Just in case it helps any folks: I've dealt with long-term tinnitus in the past. I've grown to love etymotic earplugs, the standard fit blue ones are very comfortable. I make sure to always have a pair in all of my instrument bags, and they've helped me out enormously. Always bring them to gigs too, although occasionally I'll pop them out for a really good song.
I have some extra standard foam earplugs in my gig bags too, but one benefit of the etymotic ones is that you can pull them out partially to actually tune how much high-frequency content you heard.
Those aluminum ones looks really interesting, though, I've never seems ones like them. May give them a shot!

I've got a bit that comes in and out, very high frequency. I blame college bands I did sound for who didn't know how to hold a fucking mic. (Never cup the ball of the mic. Becomes omni, so feedback city.) I'm glad it's not constant.
I really should get custom fit IEMs for the commute--less train noise, lower volume needed on the music, gentler on the ears all around.

I feel you there. I used to get ear infections a lot when I was a kid. And then when I was in my mid 20s I came down with something vaguely similar to glue ear that lasted almost two years. It gave me a real aversion to having anything in my ears so I just let my hearing deteriorate instead of using plugs. Now I'm at the point though where emergency response vehicles hurt my ears, and certain pitches at high volumes make me feel and hear something like a paper bag being crumpled inside my head. I've been meaning to explore more than just the standard foamies, I'm glad this thread turned around.
I too have narrow ear canals which make wearing earplugs uncomfortable. In addition to feeling bad, I often found that normal earplugs would not make a complete seal in my ear canal. Loud shows would result in annoying vibrations in my ear that made hearing the music difficult. Often my ears would ring after the show anyway because they weren't adequately protected. When I sang on stage, the movement of my jaw would open up my ears so I would get really loud volume spikes, which was super distracting.
So, I got fitted earplugs. And god damn. Of all the music related shit I've blown money on these have to be one of the most worthwhile investments. I got Westone ones but there are several brands I think. If you're on the fence about getting these I think you should go for it. Everything sounds better now.
