i do this too sometimes, also love sitting/laying on wooden or tile floors when playing for this same reason.BetterOffShred wrote:I rest my head against the upper horn of the guitar and let it vibrate through my skull. I love it
I don't know how to explain it, but after a day of nearly nothing seeming to fit right within the world, including yourself, just feeling your whole body resonate on the floor with your instrument/amp is really calming. It isn't even anything super loud or pushing a lot of air, just having enough volume to start to get things to almost pulse is enough usually. I probably look crazy doing it now that i think about it...

I don't do anything "just plain *weird*".
Oh, my word, all my "weird" is "weird weird".

I think the pinky anchor thing is fairly common with guitarists. I remember reading an interview with Dave Mustaine, where he said he does that, which was the first time I had heard of it. I don't ever do it, myself-I tried playing like that after reading the interview, and thought it was very awkward and didn't make any sense. It's interesting how things like that can totally work for one musician, and not work at all for another.

A buddy noted on my pinky anchor when I fingerpick a couple of years ago and told me Joni Mitchell did the same thing so I was always kinda proud of my Joni Pinkie.
Sometimes my hand cramps up because of this but I can't pick any other way.
I use the last part of my ring finger when I play barre chords based on A major. I use three fingers for the actual A major though or, most of the time I play an A7 and mute the g string.
I hate picks that are larger than jazzIII, small mandolin picks are my jam!
I hate amp distortion and amp reverb. Much rather have pedals for that shit.
I miss my Marshall Valvestate amp because of that stereo chorus. I used to get so much mileage out of that and a distortion.

On occasion I'll get some low rumbling feedback going and do a headstand in front of my bass amp.
On every occasion, it makes me nauseous. But it's cool for a while.
I wanna build an infrasonic isolation chamber that you sit in. The Hurt Locker.

I know more guitarists that anchor the pinky then don't. But most of them are metal players. I think it's a precision thing?
So how many of you goofballs do weird shit with your mouth when you play?
I know when I'm trying not to fuck up I will clench my teeth, might be a little jaw jacking in there too.

Re: What's something that you do, that's just plain *weird*?
I don't know if I do anything weird when playing? This question has stumped me since the thread started. I change up my technique while playing several times, but that's not weird. I like to use my thumb to play to get fatter notes, that's not weird.
Maybe the oddest thing I do is play with my eyes closed? I don't know. I will play with my eyes closed until I get the notes down to a muscle memory pattern without looking. I think that's just good practice?
I move my face a lot when I play. Like grinding my teeth and shit.

If I'm really zoned out playing, sometimes I stick my tongue out a little. One reason I'm glad I do vocals in my band is that I don't have a lot of opportunities to do that. It kinda kills my whole serious noise rock viberepoman wrote:I knew someone that would habitually inflate his cheeks with everytime he playeddozicusmaximus wrote:I know more guitarists that anchor the pinky then don't. I like to chew gum when I'm playing guitar. It helps me rhythmically so maybe I'm just keeping time with my teeth or something.Jesus Was a Robot wrote:I move my face a lot when I play. Like grinding my teeth and shit.

I don’t really think it’s weird but when playing newer songs I’ll scream when I’m counting how many times I’ve played a riff. It’s so loud no one can hear me and it keeps me on track better than counting in my head

I look over my left shoulder a lot when drumming. And I play a lot of chords with unusual voicings because my hands are meat hooks and I can't play regular chords very easily.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

I do that. My hands are not large but I see chords and I see scales and I think, "Yeah, I'm not doing that" so I either change tuning or voice it differently. I just did this with a scale and I can't remember the name.Invisible Man wrote:And I play a lot of chords with unusual voicings because my hands are meat hooks and I can't play regular chords very easily.
