I sometimes have the suspicion that extended range instruments get a bad rep for a derivative of that same reason (I think more people would find them useful if they didn't feel compelled to play the genres associated with them). My "nice" guitar is a 9 String and I can tell you...for every "song"

Could be wrong, but diving into this further, I usually find the melodic content questionable and not so much the effect (mostly in guitar solos to be honest). So I think whammys and wahs get a bad rep because - the source material isn't there
.

I write...I NEVER use all the strings. I sort of use the top ones so that I don't have to change tunings on my other instruments. Trust me, not playing djent and melodic death core over here
. That said, nothing against those genres and nothing against people that utilize all the strings (in fact the opposite, nothing but praise on my end).

First time I heard this it made me confused.
Next time it made me a bit upset—"why would he do this? The cover could have been so good!"
Then I just thought it was kind of funny.
Finally I found acceptance in its awesomeness.
Now I wouldn't have it any other way.

To all my wah lovers.
Seriously though. Wah, phaser, fuzz, and delay are staples in psych rock. It's fucking awesome.
I get it though. Everyone has different ears.
Also Justin Broadrick has been using an 8 string for 10 years I think? Ambient shimmer intro and dekka-doo-daa(djent) aren't the only things you can do with it.

Re: Questionable effects choices by players that you dig
i understand the wah hate, but all i have to think of is boris and everything is okay again in my mind. not many other people i can think of use it in a way that i like, and usually when i like it is being used with tons of gain, fuzz, feedback, and general wailing and roaring guitar rather than actual pristine notes.
a side note, i have a habit of acquiring things that at first try seem terrible to use and that i would never buy myself, but later can use in a way that actually makes sense for what i record. It really makes me question my own effect choices in a lot of ways, along with recording in general

also in support of fixed wah - Mick Ronson. Cocked Jen wah into a MKI Tone Bender is KILLER.
I don't need to ever heard waka-waka type funk wah again, but Leo Nocentelli uses it in great funky way.
I'm going to think more about the questionable effect choices, though.

Does anyone have any instances of Univibe not used in bloozwanking hendrixisms? I really want to like Univibes but they always give me that vibe when I hear them. I put them in the same category as wah.

It's not that I hate wah, just bad and/or boring use of it. See auto wah; see, also, envelope filter.
Love good wah. I find I rarely use mine, likely because of the standards I place on its use. I used to use it heavily, and pretty well, but I'm really out of practice and it is almost its own instrument so that doesn't fly.

I'd've been happier though if leo Nocentelli never tried to play jazz.Zounds Perspex wrote:

Not a questionable effects choice, but a seriously questionable stylistic choice there.

I like how Doyle Bramhall II uses vibe as part of his core rhythm sound, it takes what could sound like unimaginative bloozrok and makes it sound more considered and soul-y. However, I feel like he might fall into the Hendrixism category too much for you.repoman wrote:Does anyone have any instances of Univibe not used in bloozwanking hendrixisms? Stooges!
/wah discussion.
I tend to not think about gear "famous" players use. But oftentimes I don't like people's fuzz/distortion/drive tones, because I think that something could be so much harsher with a different effect. But that is probably my stylistic preference for the Clang Toanz and/or gated fuzz.
