Current Draw?

Post by dkristian »

I'd be interested in knowing what the current draw is for Dwarfcraft effects and synths.

The Rot Yr Brain and Thumping Double Squaresnakes are the ones I'm curious about, but a more complete list would be great.
I started looking into current draw lists because I've got a lot of pedals in my chain and I'm concerned about overloading the Power-All.

Thanks!

Analog Distortions, Overdrive & Fuzzes can usually be Guaranteed to be of fairly low Current Consumption, i'll hazard a guess that they'll all be under 10mA...

I also wouldn't worry about drawing too much current, if it can't provide it, the pedals just wont work untill they get enough, so you can unplug a pedal and find out if you're putting too much draw on it.

Thanks for your reply!

I'm aware of the low draw from distortions and fuzzes, but oscillators, time-based effects and filters are usually a little heavier on the mA requirements. I've been reading scary stories about One Spots and other daisy chain adapters melting, and since I've got a lot of gear on a lot of the time, and everything is on the same circuit to avoid ground loops, I figured it would be good to go about things in a more precise manner.

I've found the following websites, but a lot of the gear is mainstream stuff...

Ah I didn't realise these weren't Fuzzes, ma Bad.

Hmm, i've never heard of power supplies melting but... I wont say it can't... but I don't think it'd be as simple as drawing an extra 20mA and it going bang, it'll have safety precautions.

Anyway, they're still analog effects and not overly complex so i'm still gunna stick to around 10mA... Aen will be the person to give a definitive answer though but I really doubt these are going to be high current consumers... a 555 oscillator is going to draw around 15mA tops, hardly a strain on a One Spot which gives over an Amp or so doesn't it?

On the Front page of the dwarfcraft site Aen also says "If you haven’t already, buy yourself a Onespot from your local shop" So i'm gunna say these will work fine on it.

One spot ran the whole line of pedals (13 of them!) eight hours a day for 3 days at NAMM.

Thanks Aen,

I've just finished rewiring my entire setup, trying to distribute power evenly across each of my 4 chains. I don't have a Onespot, but I have 4 Power-Alls plugged into the same circuit as a few other pedals and instruments which require more than 9V. Since they are all plugged into the same circuit, I've managed to avoid ground loops, even with effects plugged into different Power-Alls. There's 1 connector left on each of the 11 effect daisy chains, which can give you an idea of how many effects I have plugged in, and why I'm concerened about setting the house of fire. Why so many? I'm not a guitar player. I don't even care much for keyboard synths anymore, so I'd say most of my sound comes from using a source such as the Rot Yr Brain or Signing Spoon and running it through a bunch of other stuff to create sounds that are sometimes richer than the ones I used to get with modular synths.

Thanks for making the Rot Yr Brain and TDS, they're great tone generators.

BTW, it would be interesting to hear from people on this board who are also into using effects instead of synths and guitars.
