Questionable effects choices by players that you dig

Post by John Matrix »

Good musicians make bad decisions...every now and then a player you respect comes out of left field with some pedal that might as well be that sample of the needle dragging across a record. What are some examples that come to mind?

for example: I love Tool, but every time Adam Jones busts out the talk box its the musical equivalent of Guy Fieri chilling in an art gallery. If you are not in the Scorpions you should not use a talk box.

Can't think of any, really.

But I've always wondered how would Drive Like Jehu sound with a 3-4 pedals setup.

King Buzzo and the Boss ODB-3. Huge Melvins fan, but wish he would find some new distortion sounds.

I will say it's really dependent on the user. I used to think this as well but that was before I started using one at the end of my signal chain (or at least I used to). You can use it like a kick ass filter sweep that makes everything go nuts. I used to have so much fucking fun with my Crybaby Bass at the end of my chain. Man I miss that.

I don't tend to question many pro musicians gear choices. I'm usually in awe of how well they are able to use them. Adam Jones is a fantastic guitar player and I love everything he does with Tool, so I've never thought badly about his choices.

I do sometimes wonder about dudes that use expensive gear on tours. Especially when they are a band that smashes shit like folks used to in the 90's.

I don't know if this counts but when Radiohead started making all their drums like a preset beat for the whole song I checked the fuck out.

I feel like while this is true for everything, it's especially true with wah. I love Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, but when he uses wah in anything but a fixed position I cringe.

It's an awesome pedal for noise. :idk: I miss mine, even with its snapped-off treble knob.

Backed. I wanted to say this but I just wasn't brave enough because I'm a coward and didn't want to start another argument lol. Wah is wahnk and I'm using worra as a human shield if anyone doesn't like that.

My last comment didn't post? Or I posted it in the wrong thread...
