Submitted!
Mine sucks, and I learned to never try to make music on a screen ever again.

Mine sucks out loud as well but was at least able to get something done. All the samples are quality, it was hard to choose a direction. Edit: Submitted.

Re: Open Source ILF Collab Vol. 2
yes it was hard to settle on a direction.
happy with the one I got now
no more tweaking samples
just agreeing with myself on an arrangement
and ahem "mixing" to make it suck less
can I get another deadline to help me kick my ass to do that?

looking forward to hearing what everyone did--hopefully get some background on how everyone approached their tracks.

Re: Open Source ILF Collab Vol. 2
Hi man,
we got until thursday
ableton Live is great for experimenting with those samples.
here is one approach, not too dissimilar to the one I'm using with this:
1 - try lots of slowing down, speeding up, change tuning, loop snippets, reversing, load into simplr to make chromatically playable...
2- as soon as you find something you like, keep it looping in the background while you repeat the above with a different sample to find something that fits/contrast nicely
3- repeat till you feel you got enough parts/flavors
4- arrange
5-done
wait, done?
I'm not done yet... o_O

Re: Open Source ILF Collab Vol. 2
For me I generally start with a beat to set a tone and build from there. Oftentimes the beat will be a placeholder for something better later. I'll then find samples that fit it and tune the base sample to something nice. And then tune everything else that comes in to that and just build up

Re: Open Source ILF Collab Vol. 2
I started with a bassline. Which is sort of like starting with a beat, so yeah.
I fully expect mine and drod's entries to be subliminally the same song this year except his will sound better.

Re: Open Source ILF Collab Vol. 2
My first submission was junk. I resubmitted a maybe better version last night. I flooped the timing on a couple loops the first time around.
