"Godflesh" Novation Circuit?

Post by Animal Rescue »

Never had a chance to check one out, never even seen one live so any suggestions are helpful.
Think you could set up a Novation Circuit with some crushing samples for creating simplified "Godflesh" inspired jams while chilling out on the couch or traveling? Dark, heavy, hammering, psychedelic sound samples for a "Godflesh" type Novation Circuit? I wouldn't expect it to be my main source of recording but more for checking out ideas and as a source of relaxation and inspiration.
Oh yeah, has anyone ran one through fuzz pedals? Does it run pedals very well? We have a HUGE collection of effect pedals that I love to use in gratitious fashion.
Thanks for the advice in advance!

OK, now that I've thought about my own question more, can you swap out every sound sample on the Circuit and add your own for a completely customized sound bank?
I love the idea of it but the stock sound seem pretty weak to me (on youTube that is). Just wondering if it could be turned into an all "Industrial Grinder" or "70's Roots Dub" Circuit.
Thanks!

Yes, basically every stock sound can be changed - you can change all the drum samples to your own and edit all the synth patches. I've left mine mostly as it is with a few of my favourite drum samples added (got rid of some of the dodgier percussion hits and decided I don't really need 8 different clap sounds)

As a source of relaxation and inspiration it is something else. I can lose a lot of time lying in bed making primitive Tangerine Dream-style electronica or programming weird glitchy beats. The firmware update that has added step divisions for the drum sequencer makes it great for that. Most of what I create just ends up saved on the Circuit until I delete it to make room for something else but it's so easy to write stuff on. It even works pretty well as a (fairly rudimentary) MIDI keyboard controller, which is great if I'm going away and can just throw it in my laptop bag.

Thanks for the response! That's exactly what I'd end up using it for too. Mainly chilling on the couch and traveling. I love that it's extremely portable.
I've checked a bunch of demos out but I haven't seen it used for anything heavy or fuzzed out. I can see swapping it back and forth between a 70's Dub Machine and an Industrial Grinder. Might just be the next piece of gear to pick up.

As a dub fan my only criticism is it doesn't have a delay that can do the correct dub snare echo sound - you know the one I mean! All the delays in triplet divisions are way too dense...

I know exactly the sound you're talking about and I'd miss it. I wonder if you have enough sample time available to sample an echoed out snare hit?
"70's dub grinder" Love it. Hell, that describes half our songs ...

I'm hoping there'll be an update at some point that adds a bit more control to the effects because it's the only section of it that still feels like a bit of an afterthought at the moment.
