Distortion ?

Post by sylnau »

Which distortion would you get to play fast and tight with some lows. More hard rock (mids) than metal (scooped).

BOSS HM-3. It's my go-to pedal for exactly that purpose. I used it just yesterday night at a jam session. I even tuned E6 down to D, what I normally don't like to do, but the piece was in D and it sounded massive that way. Totally underestimated pedal - it sounds enormous through my tube amp and it cuts through the mix with its EQ.

Maybe a DOD Gunslinger or Walrus Audio Red. A hot-rodded Buzzaround clone like the ARC Crimson King is on the fuzzier end of this spectrum. The dirty channel on my Peavey Classic 20 MH also meets these criteria.

There may be cheaper options but Elements can do this and so much more...

But a RAT might not have the lows sylnau wants. I also like my Turbo RAT, but that's not the answer to everything.

Not sure if this falls into a category of your needs but I heard the Metal Zone is pretty good. For 22 bucks, I bet you can't beat it either. :)

+1 for the elements, I feel like it can do anything as far distortion goes.

I'll throw out the Barber Compact Direct Drive as a suggestion. Very versatile for its small size, pretty much a "every version of a Marshall tone" style pedal. Doesn't get all the way into metal gain territory, but just up to the edge of that, very mid forward, lots of amp-like harmonic content.

A Rat is seriously lacking in the lows in my book. The Red is pretty awesome and pretty flexible with the three band eq and toggle. I found myself loving it a lot more than I expected.

Marshall Shredmaster is pretty good for this and can do both boosted and scooped mids with the contour control.
