Dying tape/fucked up record/warped vibrato
Is there a pedal that will do that? I'm essentially trying to steal a sound from Jesu and don't know how to replicate it. Song is [bandcamp]https://jesu.bandcamp.com/track/comforter[/bandcamp] and the effect is really apparent at the beginning and the very end. I know Broadrick uses a multieffect of some sort (Line 6 or something?), so maybe it's his own creation.

Re: Dying tape/fucked up record/warped vibrato
Sound at the beginning sounds like a sample that's pitch modulated with an envelope or some other mod source (automation, some lfo) and then further transposed down. Sound at the end just sounds like he's using a vibrato arm. Sample at the beginning could also be him using the vibrato arm on the guitar, but you know, sampled.

Yeah I want the Warped Vinyl but the pricetag is giving me pause. I'm sure it's worth it but that's a hard pill to swallow right now.

Re: Dying tape/fucked up record/warped vibrato
Listening to the intro to me it sounds like a mix of two vibrato effects; a slow deep undulation of the pitch and a high frequency warble (flutter?) that has the effect of shaping the timbre of the sound more than the pitch feel. The latter effect might be a little subtle. Listen to the piano notes at the end of Closer from NIN for reference. Maybe he ran it through a tape recorder a few times and applied the slow vibrato afterwards? The flutter effect can be mimicked quite well by modulating your signal with a noise generator. I've done a similar effect on the FORM1 pedal that I held workshops with Fall 2017. Getting the noise generator right is the tricky part.

I think there's some saturation and very short delay on there as well. It's reminiscent of a typical sound used in trap music. M

So, I just tried something quick and got kinda sorta there, considering I didn't have the original sample. I haven't slept for some 27 hours so my judgement might be really off
. The main thing here is using the modulation in H-Delay at almost 100%, some chorus for further shifting and reverb, comp and distortion. Recorded to my phone for extra lo-fi, hope it translates well enough. Did the panning but alas.

You can't get those nice tape-saturated timbres with it, but the Alesis Akira has some very usable vibrato effects. I used the very simple setup of a MIDI-sequenced ROMpler through a Boss DD-20 (stereo mode) and the Akira's "vibro-wobble" effect on various tracks for that kind of wobbling vinyl/tape effect on some recordings. Bear in mind, I am only posting these tracks for demonstration purposes. They do a good job of illustrating some of the subtler uses of the vibro-wobble effect:

https://fgfy.bandcamp.com/album/giving- ... e-darkness
https://fgfy.bandcamp.com/album/youre-pathetic
https://fgfy.bandcamp.com/album/becomin ... -the-stars (you really hear the sickly weeoooweeeoooweeeooo dynamic tremolo/pitch vibrato combination effect over the whole mix in the middle of this one)
It's kind of a crude approximation, I know. It doesn't sound nearly as dirty/saturated, or nearly as "real" or randomized. But it's a step in the right direction, and the going price of Akira/Ineko units seems to have dropped significantly over the years. Also, I suspect there are a lot of other similarly-aged rack multis with similar effects.
Any standalone tremolo, vibrato and pan effects can get you in the ballpark, though, and if you have hands free, you can tweak them in real time to get some randomization. It's even better if you can stack 2 of each kind of effect, to give the illusion of a randomized effect. I guess I am overthinking this now, though. I don't really have suggestions for cheap all-in-one boxes.

Surprised no-one's mentioned the Shallow Water yet, it's pretty much that sound in a box.

Re: Dying tape/fucked up record/warped vibrato
Ending sounds like some fender offset vibrato guitar on top of another track that is instrument->reverb/echo->vibrato. Beginning parts just sound like vibrato/vinyl sim to me. Anyways, to add to what was listed above some other stuff to check out: Boss VB-2, Mid-fi Pitch Pirate, Holowon Tape Soup, Seppuku Mind Warp. Chorus pedals that can go full wet/have a wet out.
The LFO shape on the vibrato at the end reminds me of the modulation on my DBA Echo Dream II or a Deluxe Memory Man.
SP-303 is a great piece to have around for a multi-effect processor, especially for music of this sort.

Man, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. I think you've pretty much nailed it.actual wrote:So, I just tried something quick and got kinda sorta there, considering I didn't have the original sample. Tape+, warped vinyl, or Generation Loss into modulated delay or modulated reverb?
