Well, I have an SS-11A and SS-20 on order. I'm now eyeing this from Correct Sound Custom:

My only apprehension about tubes is their availability in the future. Only a few companies make them (see below - from Amplified Parts). I also wish there were more rack-based preamps available. That ENGL E530 looks nice.

JJ/Tesla

The Tesla factory in Czechoslovakia was one of the oldest factories in the world producing vacuum tubes since the mid 1920s. In 1994, after relocating Tesla factory equipment and many of its experienced engineers to the Slovak Republic, JJ Electronic began development and production of vacuum tubes. Since that time, JJ has successfully introduced many tube types into production and today produces more tube types than any other factory. All these products have been safety certified for use around the world and are well known throughout. We carefully match these tubes ourselves; they can be purchased as pairs, quads and in some types as sextets.

Winged C

JSC Svetlana is a Russian company that owns and operates the Svetlana factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, which has been making vacuum tubes for almost 100 years. This factory's tubes are sold under the brand names Winged C and SED in the U.S. This factory produces the highest quality vacuum tubes made today. See www.wingedc.com for more information. We carefully match these tubes ourselves; they can be purchased as pairs, quads and in some types as sextets.

Xpo-pul / Saratov, Russia

The Xpo-pul factory (formerly part of Reflector) in Saratov, Russia is an entirely different Russian company that makes vacuum tubes for an American corporation that controls the Sovtek, and Electro-Harmonix names. In addition to the Svetlana brand tubes sold in the United States, current production Tung-Sol and Mullard brands are also made in this factory. (For more information, see www.wingedc.com.) We carefully match these tubes ourselves; they can be purchased as pairs, quads and in some types as sextets.

Shuguang, China

The Shuguang factory in China is officially known as Shuguang Electron Group Co., Ltd, a well known large-scale enterprise of the electron industry in China, founded in 1958. Valve Art and Golden Dragon brands are produced in the Shuguang factory as well as generic Chinese/Sino tubes. In the past Chinese tubes were thought to be of low quality, but today the quality of Chinese tubes is greatly improved and they are frequently found in large manufacturers' amplifiers. We carefully match these tubes ourselves; they can be purchased as pairs, quads and in some types as sextets.

Well the SS-11A sounds great! I even switched out the 12AX7EH tubes that were in the pedal and put in Retrovalves (solid state replacements) - it still sounded great. I'm looking forward to getting the SS-20 and am interested in pursuing AMT's other products.

I got the AMT SS-20. It sounds more “modern” than the SS-11a and the lead/crunch channels share the same volume pot. It’s very articulate and has great form factor. It has one 12ax7 tube. I’m really starting to think that 9volt is a big limitation for overdrive/ distortion pedals. The AMT pedals are 12volts and have a clarity/power/low noise quality that I haven’t heard 9volt pedals replicate. Big muff may be an exception but that’s a different animal. Also, these AMT pedals are preamps so I put them straight into the return of the fx loop. I would like to get an engl 530 soon. Those look promising.

I have a AMT SS20 and I love it! Compact and powerful!
I've built a mini AB-Box with a volume knob on the one out, so that I can select on the flight between the normal out and the emu cab out, depending on the sounds I need or if I go thru a PA or guitar Amp.

Thru the years I also tried and changed a lot of different types of 12AX7.
Now inside I have a Mullard 12AX7, the reissue one with long plates.
I found long plates tubes to sound more full an round compared to the normal short plates 12AX7.
Also Sovtek 12AX7LPS sounds as good and the Mullard, but the Mullard to my hears is a bit more beefy/wooly/doomy.

I used to have many such pedal preamps in the past, Mesa Boogie V-Twin was the first one, then I switched to a Brunetti Overtone2. Then I got the AMT and a Yerasov Ptero Driver, which was also cool, but eventually sold lately since I didn't used it no more.

The ss20 takes pedals well on the clean channel. Put a dod gunslinger in front for a nice chainsaw distortion. The one downside of the ss20 is the shared eq between the crunch and lead channels. But since the preamp takes pedals so well you can use your favored distortion for a significantly different overdrive. But overall, I prefer the ss11a.

What do you like better abou tthe SS11? There's one video comparing the SS200 and SS11b, and the SS11's crunch/lead from that demo sound kind of more "clean and mid scooped".

Separate eq for crunch/lead, note clarity, and liveliness ... I find it much easier to find a great sound

Oh man, those sound great and they look like little Jeeps!
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

A matter of taste as always ;) I never tried the SS11, but from the video I better like the SS20 and its grinding mids. And I like I can use both normal out and emu cab out at the same time.

Has anybody tried the Mesa Studio and Quads with bass? Or, how is their bass response in general?

Plug these direct into a power amp which feeds into your favorite cabinet and you have all you need. They are also built like tanks ( more sturdy than a Jeep) ...

That’s cool; I can use either without much complaint. To really get some variety get both and use a looper switch pedal:

2 clean settings (normal/treble) and 4 distortion settings ....
