Re: Can we talk about samplers?
So what about the new OctaTrack Mk. II withs its updated OS?
Is the DigiTact STILL the way to go for live focused sampling?
I was looking at the MPC Live before Knobs released his OT Mk II demo, but then I found the DT.
And all of the demo videos I’ve seen so Farris these three samplers hi-light music that’s... a little more “fast paced” and “beat oriented” than I plan to be.
*insert overly gratuitous air quotes here*
Someone do a Wolf Eyes/Ben Frost style demo!

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
I wish people did demos like this; I'm really not interested in making beats or techno. I want to hear what stuff can do with slower sample manipulation and ambience.ALLisNOISE wrote:Someone do a Wolf Eyes/Ben Frost style demo!
Also, the only reason I'm not looking at the Octatrack is because it's just too much for me. I'm usually happier working within limits than with infinite possibilities.

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
as far as i know the new OS is available for the mk1 as well. The price of a mk2 really puts it out of my league, whereas a used mk1 can be had if I flip a few pedals..ALLisNOISE wrote:So what about the new OctaTrack Mk. II withs its updated OS?

Interesting train of thought here. I think I might be underestimating the complicatedness of the OT here but judging from the videos I've seen it doesn't seem like an OVERLY complicated thing? We aren't talking Waldorf Blofeld levels of menu diving here are we?Ev_O))) wrote: Yeah despite the fact I've posted a lot in this thread already, this is right where I'm at. Mk1 OTs can be had for $1.1-1.3k AUD, where a new DT is about $970 AUD at the moment. Negligible difference when you consider the difference in power/ability.
That said ,here are the conclusions I've drawn that have pushed me towards the digitakt:
I've played with my friends DT on a few occasions and have been able to get the hang of the workflow quickly. I'm already semi familiar with Elektron stuff in general as I have an analog 4 and it helped with the DT. However, all the time in the world with my analog 4 has not helped in my few encounters with the octatrack. Its a whole other beast. So many menus requiring shortcuts and intense familiarity to use efficiently. I wouldn't call it complicated as much as I'd say it does a fuckload of stuff in a small amount of space and if I put in a heap of time one on one I'm sure I'd be ok. But the DT has been super immediate in comparison.
The limitations of the DT seem really useful to me personally. I'm a committed lover and user of Ableton and I feel like the DT will offer significant enough contrast to be inspirational with relative ease of use, rather than committing to learning something as in depth as the OT and having some serious overlap.
Also, the fucking screen on the OTmk1 is hard work. So much going on in a little grey space.
That said, the OT offers deeper sample fucking functionality, looping machines and more. That''s the only thing holding me back. Will I eventually kick myself for not just committing to the OT?
Maybe. But probably not.
Also, I don't plan to use it as a drum sampler either. Gonna pair it with my zoom h5 and use it to collect and manipulate sounds on the go and work within boundaries and just have some fun away from a computer all the time.
I just feel like pairing an Octatrack with a microgranny, an SK-5 and an OP-1 would be so freaking rad once I learn how to deal with the OT

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
Haven't heard much at all about the MPC live and at the pricepoint it's still a bit too dear for me to consider, but it seems to be pretty feature packed and capable of an enormous amount of things. Hope someone can chime in with some feedback on them.

But nah its not really that crazy, its just a lot of different things and honestly that setup sounds mad. 1000s of people have tamed these things, there's no reason any of us can't. It's complex, but that's because it does a heaaaaaappppp of shit. I might have come on a bit strong there my bad. If you put in the time, it would be a pretty much unfuckwithable set up.

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
I also want to chime in on the OP-1 and say the overarching selling point is portability tied with the amount of features it has. And if portability isn't a priority, and you're buying it solely for its sampling capabilities, I would say other options are more economical.
The sampler works for extremely well for my purposes and while it is a surprisingly big chunk of how I use the OP-1, I think a need for all the other features is necessary to feel like it was worth the price point.

microgranny bc it distorts them quite a bit

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
Hey, I want this thread on the front.
I've been seeing some people using a volca sample to do some cool shit, and I've been using mine for simple sampled drums and shit, but not for anything super hype or anything. Anyone else use a volca sample to do some actual cool shit?

Re: Can we talk about samplers?
cuckoo made a nice video to explain the differences between the octa and the digitakt.
I think the digitakt strengths are ease of use, easier learning curve, less menu diving... and around February it should get full overbridge support to be fully integrated in ableton.
as of now the filter seems a bit limited, and you can't backup your work but many hope they will improve when a fw update will be released.
I'm an octatrack noob, while it's kinda easy after a couple of vids to get going for regular stuff, it feels very deep as a machine and I get discouraged at times.
the slider is super cool and destroying sounds is fun
