Re: Man the doom movement was really disappointing.
My problem is I live on a tiny island with next to no local scene and very little in the way of touring bands stopping by so my exposure to music is pretty much exclusively through albums and I find out about stuff through reviews and forums. Which is pretty cool but I spent many years of Forever Doomed buying third tier sludge and black metal because they were super hip at that moment in time.D.o.S. wrote:That is a lovely Sword burn and I always appreciate those.Dapper Bandit wrote:For me the real issue with that whole doom movement was that for every Sleep you had a dozen 13's. Bands that were good enough in their own right but average albums were being hyped as works of great genius which ended up diluting the impact of the truly great stuff. I mean how many times can you try and find a redeeming feature in The Sword before you just get burnt out?
As a curator of my own taste, I agree. As a fan of the style in general... if people like it who really cares?
If I think a given band are as boring as it gets, but I'll just bail to go have a beer or two during their set if I have to see them, and I'm never going to listen to them on record, so they don't really effect me one way or the other. Doom and let doom.
Then one day I realised that most of these bands were Not. That. Good. And I had been acting out of some sort of misplaced scene loyalty, which reflects more on me, to be fair. Plus I dug out some old John Zorn records and got my mind blown all over again and then I heard Tortoise.
After a break from the genre I have come back to some old favourites that have really held up well IMO. That first Graves At Sea album is still pretty unfuckwithable.

Remember when no one gave a shit about Yob because they were signed to Metal Blade?

I don't remember hearing people complain about that but I rarely ventured out of the gear section of stonerrock.comD.o.S. wrote:Remember when no one gave a shit about Yob because they were signed to Metal Blade?

People slept on the first run of that band (and Midian, to be honest) super hard.

I would argue we can go even further back than TANGERINE DREAM (but not as far back as Feudal Japan).

Re: Man the doom movement was really disappointing.
I saw Weedeater recently and there were FOUR opening doom bands (on a WEEKNIGHT), and I enjoyed none of them. My ratio for doom is probably 1/4000 bands that really excite me. And then I get burned out. And then I hear that last Salem's Pot LP and whoa mama it's worth sifting through 100,000 bands tht don't yank my chain for something like that.
New Monolord, Bell Witch and I just got turned on to a Canadian band called STRANGE BROUE who hit that EW vibe and do it well. It's out there....

It's all about how you perceive heavy.. Personally, Dommedagsnatt... You also have to factor in that over 50% of doom is just ripping of the melvins's Joe Preston album...$harkToootth wrote:So...what is the 'heaviest' doom album?
