now, there's something i haven't seen before. i wonder what the missing piece of control plate where it's broken off at the top looked like. looks like it'd have a ton of neck dive with that smallish hollow body, but i bet those Japanese single-coils sound marvelous on a 12-string.

Yeah, I've never seen one quite like that. Not sure those're the original pickups. (They usually had either those weird V-shaped pickups or Höfner staple-like pickups.) Given the stated Kustom connection, they may actually be DeArmonds. I think the control plate probably used to be symmetrical.

What kind of monster puts a pickguard overlapping a body hole. It just looks sloppy.

Doesn't the pickguard on most guitars like that overlap the treble-side soundhole to some degree?
