I was playing with this sound and I'm fairly certain it is a two octave interval. To get it clean you've gotta have something to dampen the strings, like one of those stupid shred sock scrunchy things.

Seconding this.
This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

Yeah, sounds like a 1 octave interval.

In terms of how it was originally made, you're right it could have been (probably was) just sequenced to play the notes rapidly rather than any kind of recorded live performance/effect.

On a synth, that would be super easy to recreate. Square wave LFO modulating the oscillator frequency, set to a 1-octave swing.

On a guitar, the Moog ClusterFlux could certainly do that, maybe the Moog Delay. Pitch pirate is another option that someone mentioned. Maybe Chase Bliss chorus/delay too (again, square wave LFO's depth set to octave). About any vibrato (or short delay) with a square wave LFO and depth that goes up to an octave should be able to get you there.

Not hearing ring mod - with ring mod you would hear both frequencies at the same time; that is definitely alternating.

I got pretty close awhile back using the sequencer on the Super 4th Door.

(sorry don't know how to embed instagram videos)

I think it was just flipping between two octaves at a super fast rate.

This is why I love my KORG Poly-61 synthesizer. It can create exactly THESE sounds. I love it to pieces, because it has all the cool Atari game arpeggio sounds.

And this is indeed a narrow pulsewidth sound with an octave arpeggio. No doubts about that.
With guitar I could achieve something like that with my KORG KWS-301 wave shaper, my BOSS OC-3 and go from its stereo outs into the stereo inputs of my PN-2 and use the full wet square panning mode in mono out.

Doesn't the Arpanoid do something like this, if not exactly?

I just tried it out a few minutes ago. It doesn't come too near to the desired sound. But it sounds cool on its own. The PN-2's LFO isn't fast enough and you really have to pitch it an octave higher than the original sound, not below. You will have to make your guitar sound like a square wave first and then you need a good sounding pitch shifter. Or a KORG Poly-61 ... ;)

Hi guys
I'm writing an algorithm that does this effect. Can post them here when it's completed. The idea is to have a knob for pitch transposition rate (how fast you skip between your regular pitch and the shifted pitch) and a knob that sets the pitch shift interval. This control will be divided into steps. Could you guys give me some recommendations on what steps to include? So far I have:
-1 ocatve
-7 semitones
+7 semitones
+1 ocatve
+1 ocatve and 7 semitones

Also I have room for one additional parameter. Any suggestions ?

Glissando, or duty cycle (would only be interesting at lower frequencies though)

gliss would be best I think?

Or instead, depending on how the algorithm works whether it's possible to code without tweaking, I think it might sound really good to have a tremolo synced to the pitch change with adjustable depth (to smooth out the binary note shifts in a different way to glissando).

-5 semitones would probably be a good interval, as far as those go. I would have to hear the algorithm in action to decide if 3rd and 6ths would sound awful or good..
