Personally I'd like to see it geared more towards active instruments but that would probably entail an overhaul of the circuit. I hate that there are so many pedals that don't jive with active basses. I feel like the second stomp could have been great but it turns to mush with actives, at least for me it did.

There are various problems with active pickups for FX, impedance issues or volume are the main ones. Any super compressy effect like this will really compress the sheer volume/power of active pickups. This can be solved by turning down your volume, main side being, you loose all that volume. The impedance issue is harder to solve, because a lot of the impedance interactivity you get with pedals can't be worked to such vastly different impedances. It's just an unfortunate reality where you might have to build for one or for the other. And more people use passive pickups.

There are some solutions you could try though. Some people use a sansamp first in their chain. Some people use guitar pickup simulators. All have their benefits and drawbacks though.

Nah. LOL. I've searched long and hard for stuff that works with active basses. I've gotten that shit down to almost a fucking science at this point.

The issue is over compression for sure and impedance in general. However, many builders have figured this out. It seems that these days I only run into issue every once in awhile. For instance, I almost never have issues with modulation pedals. In fact, they normally sound better with actives. However, some folks just cannot make them the way they need to be made for actives. It's really frustrating because I fucking hate passive bass. Guitar, passive all day baby. Bass is different for me.

Jesus, the truth that you don't want to hear is that basses sound best when they sound like basses, not wacky effect- laden nonsense. That's why pedal companies don't cater to bass players. I know it, they know it, and now you know it too. :thumb:

Mr. Bregman, how much of the original Manifold Drive circuit would you say is in this? Very happy owner here. Just asking out of curiosity and A/B'ing with my own ears and deductions.

That's not true. Active basses with lots of fx are great for sounding like Hoobastank or Incubus.

Exactly 0%. I mean, they both have resistors and capacitors and transistors in them, so 5%?

The Manifold is based on a pair of JFETs biased in a complimentary pair with a reactive load, and the HEQ1 doesn't have any JFETs in it at all.

If you want to get all abstract, I think there's probbaly some similarity in all the pedals I design because I have a specific sonic aestetic, but that's gettin pretty touchy-feely.
