Using a usb only midi keyboard with hardware synth
Hello, I have an M-Audio Keystation that can only be powered with the usb connection and doesnt have a midi 5pin connector. Id like to be able to power it with an wall supply and get a 5 pin out to use with hardware synths, can i do this?

You'll need something like the Keith McMillen Midi Expander, but I'm not even sure this would work with any device...
At this point it's almost simpler/cheaper to buy another keyboard that has a MIDI output (more and more devices now has this using a minijack rather than a DIN jack and you use an adapter cable).

I'd look into the Kenton USB host, it will supply power via usb as well.

It works well. (Use it to control/power a synth that runs on teensy)Psyre wrote:I'd look into the Kenton USB host, it will supply power via usb as well.
Still I think it would just be easier and about the same price (or cheaper) to pick up an older midi keyboard like osc said.
Picked up an m-audio oxygen for 30$.

Yeah, only works with KMI gear.oscillateur wrote:You'll need something like the Keith McMillen Midi Expander, but I'm not even sure this would work with any device...
Kenton is solid, but if for less money you can buy an Axoloti to use as a midi host, and about about a million other things. Would just require you to make a box/have a box made if you're not into using a bare PCB.
