Out of curiosity, does anybody know if the Neutrino is analog or digital?

Id really like to find something that can do crazy sounds with plenty of resonance, lp bp hp options, and up and down filter sweeps. I feel like the mutron is probably capable of this but what else is out there

I have a Prometheus DLX (accessible and versatile), EQD Interstellar Orbiter (like a poor man's Ludwig Phase II), and a MIDI Murf (unique, but somewhat less intuitive). I sold a Tracer City years ago and haven't looked back.

If funds are no issue, there's the Glou-Glou Rendezvous ($600+ from FRA). I'm also intrigued by the Dogmatek Artic Wolf ( $319 from NZ).

Two more of the weirdest and most interesting filters that I know of are the WMD Protostar (owned the Super Fatman) and the Interstellar Watermelon 2 (enjoyed the V1). You might also research the Source Audio Stingray. (there's also pedals out there like the Happiness and the ARF by Dwarfcraft, but the Protostar seems like a better fit for my own needs).

Of course the Elektron Analog Heat and Sherman Filterbank 2 also handle filtering and distortion. The Sherman is a beast, and capable of everything from thick wooly fuzz to tsunami sweeps, but if you don't have a dedicated MIDI controller you'll regret it. The pots are sensitive to even slight changes. (haven't played the Heat yet, but to me it's more of a mastering tool than a touring filter)

Hasn't been referenced yet but the Shapeshift Mountain might fit the bill too (for ancient bones), based on your criteria, even though it's an LPF not an "Envelope Filter" per say.

That's because it's not in anyone's ad copy. I went through a half-dozen vendor pages and ctrl+f'd my way through them all. Then I e-mailed Keeley, and they replied 15 minutes later.

It would seem so. As much as I find the over-saturation of ad hype annoying, when I don't see those familiar buzz words like analog/true-bypass/ handmade, I start to wonder if the opposite is in effect. But whatever, I replied to a dialogue I was having with them last week about the rotary algorithm for the DynoMyRoto vs the Monterey, and got a courteous response 15 minutes later. You can't realistically do better than that.

Low Pass, High Pass, Bandpass, Bandpass plus original signal, distortion at demand ... it's really an awesome unit. I have used it live several times and it serves well in every situation. Sadly it's quite rare and extremely underrated as the whole PME-40X series.

For those of you who don't mind digital circuitry, using non-guitar-oriented gear, and/or having to use a TB loop to counter bypass noise, the Alesis Philtre is a highly versatile option. The Earthquaker Devices Spatial Delivery covers quite a bit of ground as well, but, as mentioned earlier, can be a bit noisy (mostly at more extreme settings or when fed into high gain dirt).

The 3leaf Audio Proton is another Mutron III clone. I see them used on Reverb all the time and wonder why they get flipped so often.

I've added the Keeley Neutrino to my shortlist, though will likely be a cheapskate and go for the DOD 440. Time to watch some demo vids.

After some additional searching and a bit of trial and error, my current go-to analog filters are a Subdecay Vocawah and (chank-o-riffic purple) 3 Leaf V3 Proton. Both are much quieter than options like the EQD Spatial Delivery and Lovepedal Rubber Chicken, the latter of which sounds fantastic clean, but hisses like a windstorm when run into medium to high gain dirt.

I also gave a DOD 440 RI a trial run a while back and returned it due to limited dynamic response and grounding issues. The Mojo Hand 443 was good for a brief bit of fun, but didn't ultimately provide the sweep I prefer. This has led me to the conclusion that I'm probably not a traditional DOD 440 design kind of guy (with guitar at least).

Though its frequency is limited to the bandpass range, the Valeton Katfish is also worth mentioning. The affordable price, miniscule enclosure, and low noise operation make it a great option for a first (read: gateway) analog envelope filter.

The Subdecay Proteus V2 piques my interest and may become part of the collection at a later time. Has anyone been able to take one for a spin? If so, any thoughts or comments?

Those Protons do look nice. Never tried one though.

I like changing the envelope of a filter by sticking either a compressor or a dirt pedal (capable of lots of compression) in front of it.

Definitely interested in the newest version of the Proteus.
