I have a couple toddlery rugrats that like to jam with me on various casio's, drums, xylophones, recorders etc and I'm looking for some more fun stuff. There are some decent looking zithers and kalimbas on amazon that aren't too $$$ to get destroyed by the little ones. Any other ideas/recommendations for sub-$50 stuff?
HAha this thread is going awesome. Thanks for the ideas so far. I've had my eye on those Loogs for a while. I think I'll wait until they're a tad older - I have a uke and they go full thrash on it.
Oh yeah a melodica would be good for them. They do well with kazoos and the casio so that's a logical combo. Otamatone - yes awesome, and I came across that Dato thingy but ruled it out cost-wise.
Does that gong come in a 5 inch diameter version? :P
One or two monotrons is a lot of fun. The right size for little fingers, and the ribbon is really immediate. The delay one is maybe the most fun. Monotron into monotron delay is a sweet "my first effect chain" playset

My kids are most likely to go for the cheapo Zoom drum machine with big pads to pound on. Any kind of shaker or rain stick will make them go crazy. They really covet my Organelle so I'm tempted to get a cheap C&G Pocket Piano for them. They also like the Volcas but I'm worried they're a bit fragile.
Actually, they mostly play kazoo...
I have two kids; one is over 5, the other isn't yet 2.
