I'd totally go with Rene. The few times I've played with it it's felt real immediate and fun.

Yeah I definitely want one of those somewhere down the line when I get a bigger case. Fun as hell

Just get the PicoDSP even if you get the Rene. That thing is great for a small-ish system.

WELP! I found the answer. You've all been mislead. Turns out you need even more modules!!!

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Super interested in this:
http://www.twohp.com/modules/euclid
Seems like a good way to add some neat patterns to a small setup. I like euclidean sequencing and the small package is appealing for sure.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I would love a stomp box utility exactly like that. Imagine having something like that in a Broadcast (Copilot) format? You can connect it to CV/Expression it brings a whole other level to your effect. Or even those patterns in something like a Cooper FX AARP. I'm imagining it in one of the mini enclosures so pretty small but not 2hp small.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
That is insane. My first thought was basically "That sounds just like a DAW playing vsts. He just built Ableton out of modules."$harkToootth wrote:WELP! I found the answer. You've all been mislead. Turns out you need even more modules!!!

It does sound pretty amazing, just kinda funny when you get that much intensive layering going on, it begins to sound pretty produced.
Good LORD though... how much did all that shit cost?

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
For the Stekker set video, I would guess everything on that table (including the Eventide pedal and patch cables), at retail value, totals minimum $20,000? I just think it's impressive (from a visual standpoint) he's getting every bit of mileage out of most the modules (like, they are patched to capacity).
For the other videos, to be fair, he's not using every single module, in the frame, for those patches, but again, the ones he is using are patched to maximum capacity. I just wanted to post an example of someone who uses a lot of gear and uses it to its full potential (the guy makes sound banks for a living so of course he's going to use every single bit of every single piece of gear in his possession).

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yeah I would say at least 20K. It sounds rad, and pretty damn cool to see modular used in such a massive capacity. The produced comment wasn't a dig, just struck me as so much more (for lack of a better word) completist in its sound/application... most of the modular stuff I've seen so far has been much more pared down, even with a ton of modules. Or maybe it's that it feels more arranged? I dunno...

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I was thinking about this not to long ago, wanted to program a take on the Boss SL-20 Slicer that worked off euclidean patterns. Either single, two stacked, or two in tandem, each controlling one half of the signal (Low-pass/High-Pass). Then it would go to a splitter with a choice of Mono, Split pattern/pan, or Stereo with each Euclidean sequencer going to their respective output. Then Wave selectors, and depth, and and and...$harkToootth wrote:I would love a stomp box utility exactly like that. Imagine having something like that in a Broadcast (Copilot) format? ...and you can see why that never went anywhere.
I mean, since it's going to be digital you can get it down to 5-6 knobs, one button, and two switches: a depth Knob, sequencer selection button, three knobs for the Euclidean sequencer controls, and the two switches for the mode and out selection. I guess you can add a secondary layer of controls with the button and a knob turn, things like In Volume to push the filters and Out volume to compensate for Volume loss. (Edit: and separate tap multipliers for the two sequencers.
This is why I am glad I only have the programming side down and not the digital platform/any soldering experience. It would consume me.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
@popvulture: I think you're absolutely right. The aim of that live set was for a complete techno and IDM performance. So instead of having a couple of synths and drum machines on the table (look at a CEEPHAX ACID CREW set) he's using the modular for a complete 'arrangement'.
I was big into going to 'live modular' (lol actualgenius) sets a couple years ago and would see just as much gear on the table but with maybe 15% of the patch cables. I'm usually not one to take digs at other people's method of artistic expression but for the $ to sound ratio...you're kind of left wanting to go up to the performer and go, "...dude..."
Kind of like that moment when you're at a 'post-rock' gig and the guitar player seems to be playing his heart out on the guitar but his delay pedal is in oscillation...the math just doesn't add up.

Also for D.o.S. - Since you expressed interest in the Grackler...have you seen that maker's modular setup? It's a complete DIY system based on SERGE circuits with some of his own home brews.
