The Japanese started killing the US made pedals in the 90s from what I read. They restricted key components that killed US manufacturers. I read that DOD was the sole survivor of the Japanese assault. I think DOD adopted silent switching, like the Japanese, whereas the other US manufacturers failed to adopt. ...

There just wasn't much interest in US-made pedals at that point - the 80s stuff was almost all Japanese.

There was DOD for budget stuff (and that's what it sounded like generally as well by comparison), the RAT, and isolated local brands, but pretty much it was Boss, Ibanez, etc or bust.

DOD was a budget brand at the time - when they'd release some new gimmick for whatever the flavor of the month was, it was pretty much garbage compared to the options out at the time.

The early-Harman stuff was similar to the post-Gibson and post-Fender buyout stuff - poor QC, didn't really fit the market at the time, and got left behind pretty fast.

Unlike Fender and Gibson though they couldn't live on the logo or the rep - the only advantage they seemed to have is every mom+pop probably had them.
