Need a D*A*M* and/or EFE fan's help

Post by jazznrick »

I'm in a real band now, and I want to have my board complete. My fuzz section is the Spaceman Titan 2 (love that pedal more than any other). I would say that is my whole section and I am looking for a companion fuzz, but I also have a Frantone Cream Puff on my board. Frankly I like it more on guitar, but I can't make myself get rid of it. It's too interesting.
So back to my main dilemma. I want a companion fuzz for the Titan that will sound different, be a pedal I'm proud to have on my board, and also sound rad. I'm pretty much focused on getting an Emanating Fist or DAM pedal. I went the cheap route and bought and sold some clones. Some were better quality than others--

- Black acid clone seemed kind of like a one trick pony, but I did like the sound
-Meathead deluxe clone was kind of a piece of crap. I can't imagine the actual DAM would only work in one position

So in my price range of up to $350 max I could get a brand new Black Dust, a brand new Lucifer Rising (the guy at Tommy's seemed to be behind this), a brand new DAM DF-06 Dragonfly, a used Emanating Fist BA-01, a used DAM meathead Deluxe, and several DF-05 used DAM dragonfly.
I guess what I'm asking is- is there a stand out winner here?
Perhaps something else obscure and crazy(not dunwich)?
Also, I'm a p bass guy through a Rumble 500. I use dirt pedals to bring everything to life.

**BTW this is my first post here, and I'm excited to be here and look forward to contributing
Let me know if I'm being a redundant fool or not using this forum's etiquette**

Hey, jazznrick, welcome to the forum. :hello: Honestly, I think you'll probably get more responses asking this on the D*A*M forum.

I’m a bass player also but don’t have experience with most of the pedals you’re asking about. I did though own an Ezekiel and loved the hell out of it. It’s over your budget though. I also owned an EFE DP-01 #7, and it was pretty solid but I’m not much of a muff guy. But when I ordered the EFE pedal I asked David Main what pedals he thought are best suited for bass from his line up and he said, the one I already had (Ezekiel) and the one I was ordering. Here’s an exact quote from the email regarding the other pedals he likes for bass:

“I do use the Rooster, the Titan and also the Meathead on bass myself from time to time but not as a foundation tone, if that makes sense, just as recording tools and/or in little parts of songs that would something overly excessive. The current Meathead M-13 does actually work well with bass but I'm not sure it would be to everyone's tastes. With no means to control fuzz content it makes it pretty much a face melter.”
I've been searchin' for the dolphins in the sea.

If you didnt like the Black acid the Black dust isnt going to do you much better. I would give the Dragonfly or Sonic titan a shot.

If your not into dunwich i would try a Dunn Apostle or a moose23 electronics Dobsky

To be completely honest, all the D*A*M Fuzz Face or Muff pedals are great but they are also pretty similar to me (played through guitar).

So yeah, in terms of bass maybe indeed the Ezekiel is better suited, or I would go for an EFE Muff as it has the best price to quality ratio.
Really, the other Fuzz Face, Muff or Meathead type pedals, while great, are in my opinion nothing better than the more cost effective and pedalboard friendly EFE Muff line.

Another brand that I would look at is Black Arts Toneworks, I think a Crown Of Horns or Pharaoh would also suite the bass sound you seem to be going for quite well.
good deals with: the_brow, phantasmagorovich, alexsga, DarkAxel, goroth, The Wood Wizard, Tendollarcat, vbps, monkeydancer, intothegroove, Brobee

Was gonna say this. It's all different shades of the "huge fuzz" sound philosophy. Different roads to the same place, sonically, and similar to the Titan (based on its description).

Try something with an octave or blend or something.
