Patchulator 8000: does it pop when patching?
I'm told it does, which would kinda defeat the purpose a bit, no?
I'm also told the clone by JPTRFX doesn't pop.
Anyone experienced?
I was more inclined to buy the original to support the idea/development,
but if the clone is better/pop-free,..... hmmmmmmm

Re: Patchulator 8000: does it pop when patching?
I would speculate that any device you are hot plugging live wires on will be prone to pop. You can mitigate the pop somewhat by plugging wires "send into input" as opposed to plugging "input into send" (which is where you have your hands on an air referenced live lead currently "sending signal" that will pass through a ground connection before it hits the signal bearing conductor).
Grab a cable plugged into an amp and touch the tip to something metal to demonstrate this feature.
It's really going to boil down to user finesse.

If you think of it more as a patch bay for altering the order of FX than something to use live, you will have a better time.

Re: Patchulator 8000: does it pop when patching?
thanks for your answers,
I was hoping for some sort of live-action patch bay I guess
Hadn't thought of/looked at it the way crochambeau & aen described,
even though I've had lots of fun using a bare cable going thru fx as a noise source
hmmm,
then how can JPTR Chris claim his as pop-free, what secret mojo has he invented?
intruiging!
I'll have to ask him!

Good euphemism for abstaining from masturbation. Also band name.spacelordmother wrote:Pulldown resistor?

You'd think that would cut the signal as well though?? You'd need a boost to compensate, but at the point you're using active circuitry you might as well engineer some digital logic to handle it for you instead.spacelordmother wrote:Pulldown resistor?
I can imagine a few novel ways to do it under certain circumstances (ie have a specific output tip normaled to its input tip w a switching jack), but i doubt that's what's going on here.
In my dozen or so years fucking with plugging in active lines, I have never experienced a pop-less system.

Re: Patchulator 8000: does it pop when patching?
Are there pics of this device?
I can see a pop-less set up being engineered with a pin-matrix or logic switched connection selection system. I'm in early development of a circuit that will fill these functions (and to a degree much more) when deployed in a stand alone manner, but it's far too early for me to plant a dog in this particular race.
Anything that has you monkeying with wires will make a pop now and then, unless there's a mute function involved. Automating a mute function would add a lot of R&D and component count, so it would miss out on one of the biggest strengths of the Patchulator, which is cost.

And also dingdingding for SLM.
I guess.
No idea what your talking about, but Chris JPTR said
"resistor soldered to mass" if I got & translated that correctly......

You'll be shelling out a lot more cash (with a lot more features) then, need something like a Boss ES-8 or ES-5.ProCarsteNation wrote:thanks for your answers,

Yes it pops. I was kind of disappointed by that as it disqualifies it for live use for me. But I still find it handy for my home setup to try things out.

They definitely don't do the modular heap of cables fun, but I guess you can't always have everything....

Buy the popless plugs and use those. Expensive, but it'll work
