Keeping volume at .5-1.5 on the dirty channel, or does the clean have to be set that low as well? Funny you mention the Demon - that's next on my dirt list.

I just looked at my settings and my clean is a little over 1 from trying not to bug my downstairs neighbors last night but I do like to run my pedals pretty loud. The dirt channel actually tapers a little slower but I dunno if they're all that way. I have the older USA one with the fender knockoff metal name plate.

Right on. As long as it sounds good, I guess it doesn't really matter where the volume is set. And I usually only run my pedals a hair over unity, so maybe that will make a little difference as well.

I need to suss out some of the mods and fancy stuff you can option on to the Demon.

Ampeg VT-22's are pretty nice and can be had for cheap usually. Also keep an eye out for Traynor's, they pop up regularly for pretty reasonable prices and I don't have much bad to say about them except the same issues people have mentioned with Fenders.

I use a Solid State Univox U150R 2x10.
It only cost me $80, but I usually see it around $250-300 on eBay/Reverb.

So far it's been really solid (though, it could really benefit from better speakers). Also, it's so light I have it up on a shelf along with a little Fender Super Champ XD (my first real amp).

Also, +1 for Jazz Chorus. If I really needed a new amp for use with both guitar and synths I'd get one of those.

I really need to look into the older Ampeg stuff. I used to look for v2s a lot, but ignored most of the rest.

Any particular old Tryanor, or just about any of them? And the same issues as Fenders meaning they can sometimes harsh with pedals?

Never played one. Not against it if it sounds good clean (i.e. sparkly/not sterile) and takes pedals well (which I assume it does).

Champs bring the toanz with the little speaker?

My champ definitely did. If you get a new baffle you can put a 10" in too, which really opens up your speaker choices. Plus youll get to actually turn it up to where it sounds good. All these other amps, sans JC and other solid states, wont be anywhere close to their full potential at low/medium volumes. Whats the point of having an amp you only turn to 1.5?!

Additionally, Ive had great luck with my twin at low volumes with muffs. Maybe its the speakers I have (Jensen blackbird and scumback m75), but volume <2 takes dirt fine for me-anything but harsh.

I had an AC15C2 that I had to get rid of cause it lacked low end oomph, and cause I didn't like how it sounded with fuzz
Had an AC30C2X before that, which sounded just as nice if not nicer, but it was way to loud to sound good at home.

Had a Pro Jr too for a while, which seemed a bit too boxy and small to sound half decent with gnarly fuzz, though I guess the 10" speaker may have been a big part of the reason for that. So yeah, the blues jr might work I guess.

The DRRI I had was an excellent pedal platform. But beyonde living room volumes, it didn't stay clean.

Ended up with a tiny terror combo. The specs and size were perfect for me, I still kick myself for selling it. But as far as pedals go, strangly enough...My current solid state amp rules: Sunn Alpha 12r. Cleans are a bit stale and well...solid state -ish. Build it dirt flatout sucks balls imo.

The only amp I've played in your list is the Laney VC30 which I owned for a couple years. It's a pretty dark amp. I sold it to my bass player who changed the speaker out and he says it sounds amazing now.

I made four combos using various Frenzel amps, TRM cabs and Scumbacks and they all sound great. I also have a Music Man 112RP that I really like, kind of fender-ish and can get really loud but sounds good at lower volumes too. I found mine for 300-350, I think.

But all the Peavey Classic 30 recommendations have me really wanting to try one. I've always thought of Peavey as what you recommend to parents buying their kids their first amp! Had no idea they made anything highly regarded! (I lived in Mississippi for 7 years at one point, that's the way we thought of Peavey but that was awhile ago now)

Old made-in-the-usa peavey tube amps and instruments are righteous. The peavey you see on the shelves these days is a step backwards from what they used to do. The classics and 6505's are still cool amps but has anyone else tried the little 6505 piranha? I didnt like it at all and thought it was a little deceptive to even market it in the 6505 series. It wasnt thru its matching cab so maybe I didnt get the real deal. I dunno.

Any old Traynor will certainly be great. I've had a few (YGM-2 in particular was nice, had a great tremolo that I never used) and never had a single complaint and have sold Fenders to get Traynors for less, but maybe that's just one of the rare gear benefits that exist in Canada lol.

Also re: Jazz Chorus, they're great but Jesus Christ are they brittle sounding. I love drum machines through them because of that, but have never enjoyed guitar through just a JC. Running out to a JC and a darker/warmer amp too is one of my favourite sounds though. Even in lower tunings though I found JC's on their own to be like dropping glass a lot of the time.

Now that I think about it, my first amp was a Peavey Stereo Chorus 400 and I was playing some kind of single coil strat knock off. We were playing punk and when I go back and listen to those recordings, I like that sound better than the Gibson/Marshall combo I was playing later. And I like my playing better with that sound. So pffffft . . . who was it that said that shitzel about Peavey (me)

Bummer about the AC. I really dig their clean tone, but like dirt pedals way more that I like cleans.

Did you clip the bright cap on the DRRI? Living room volume is where my entire suburban dad existence lives. Of course, they are usually twice the cost of something like a Peavey or Blues Junior...which would mean I couldn't buy any other gear with the funds from my amp/cab. But if it's twice as good, then I couldn't be too mad at it. Plus doesn't Dylan Carlson use them a lot? And holy fuck those tones.

Get Vox Pathfinder 15r. Snip out clipping LEDs. Enjoy amp that sounds pretty good on its own at house volumes, takes pedals well, and has shockingly good, big bass for an 8" speaker.

Seriously, moderate output solid state is the way to go for home use. Lots of options, many of them cheap as fuck if you look around.
