New Pickguard Build Day

Post by cloudscapes »

(and new body paintjob)

here's how it looked like before:

the pickguard was toughest. completelly DIY. traced the existing pickguard's outline with my camera + lots of perspective correction in Photoshop. applied graphic and printed it to two sheets. applied a bunch of clear spray to "waterproof" it somewhat, so that the epoxy resin wouldn't darken the paper too much as it fused with it. oozed the epoxy into a kind of mold (took three tries and $40 worth of epoxy), let it harden, and finally cut it with scissors and a dremel saw.

damnit cloudscapes you make the coolest shit, even if it is just a pickguard. also love what you did to the paintjob on the body.

when are you gonna DIY a guitar with a sample-rate reducer in it

goddamn, cloudscapes if you built guitars and amps as well as your effects, many people would be using an entire Sonic Crayon lineup

believe it. the main reason I'm doing effects is to somehow make stuff that's either too expensive to buy or that just doesn't exist how I want it. that isn't the case for either guitars or amps. I dont think I could bring any uniqueness to those. I might make a couple for myself just for kicks, but thats about it.

and pedals are keeping me busy enough as it is. I'd be insane to take up even more DIY.

looper is on hold. I've been concentrating my diy-time only on the bitcrusher and planning the hollow earth last couple months.

ah. so the pcb for the hollow earth is still being worked on then. what's taking so long with the moths though? just a time consuming process to solder and paint, or is there something with the design itself that needs bugfixing?

pcb design for the hollow earth is ready but I havent passed the order on to the manufacterer yet. I can still build a few with the hard-to-build PCBs I have left over from last year.
the painting/finishing process is the longest, definatelly. like how there's a red "window" for the display, etc. that shit's hard because it's multiple steps, and waiting between steps for something to harden.

the moths are easy. I've had four built already since a week ago (not for sale yet) and I guess I could of made double all at once had I been bolder.
they havent been on sale yet because I still need to make a video demo of them. I dont have my old video camera anymroe so I had to get a new one this week. I'm extremelly unconfortable selling shit without people seeing/hearing it first.

aaaaaaaannd there's the whole lazyness/i-have-a-life/i-have-other-hobbies aspect. I really cant dedicate more than a certain percentage of my free time for this or else I stress out. kind of like what happened late last year. 40 hour work week already drains a lot out of me so normally I'd just want to spend the rest of my time doing stuff I like and that isn't stressful. thing is, I don't like assembling pedals. I dont enjoy it at all. I like ivnenting them and then building a couple, then I like moving on to another design. building 40 of the same, especially during the free time, especially because I dont exactly need the extra money (its just a bonus) makes me ask wtf am I doing? I dont enjoy it, so I'm trying to make it the least stressful as possible so that it has the least negative impact on my life. that means I need to spread things out slower, take more time, so be it.

it's half-justified by funding pedals/instruments or other hobbies, I guess. I was able to buy a new 35mm camera, expensive pro film and a bunch of lenses this month thanks to the little bit of money on the side.
