That has more to do with the circuit design than the number of knobs though.Pepe wrote: In some settings the pedal simply refuses to produce any sound anymore - and then you have to guess what to do to bring it back!

Re: amount of knobs lounge
I'm all about the less-is-more approach to effects right now. Even when I'm playing by myself at home, I'd like to keep it as simple as I'd want to have it for playing a show. Give me simple easy to understand control to make adjustments on the overall sound /tone based on the room, and I'm good. I end up with analysis paralysis when there are too many knobs and switches and no presets, and I've had to flip pedals because of this.
I prefer pedals with 0 - 4 knobs, but I don't mind more if they are functional and placed well. I need space between the knobs and the footswitches, put things too close together and I'll clumsily hit the wrong things every time.

This is why I got rid of my Acapulco Gold! A light breeze would make the knob move around and it got old quick. Fortunately I have a DIY clone (that sounds better) with a really stiff pot when I want that "One Knob to Glory" thing.K2000 wrote:Great idea! Larger the knob, easier it turns...although more motion is required to fully sweep from closed to open & back.Aghartha wrote:This is why I got rid of my Acapulco Gold! Next time try swapping knobs, as well as adding the rubber gasket/Grolsch beer washer underneath.

I'd like to see more pedals with an interface like this

They really need a level indicator like on Boomerang's stuff.
Even if it's intended to just be rolled around with your foot.
Their stuff was interesting when they first started, but it seems like their pedals have all been generally looked over.

Re: amount of knobs lounge
I like my knobs big and with finger room, which does somewhat limit the amount of them.
Unless you go big on the enclosure.

Dino's trace of the Schumann PLL has jumped to the top of my DIY list, and it has at least 12 knobs, and a shitload of switches, but I'm probably just going to get drunk and make it sound horrible until my girlfriend gets angry. That being said, I love 2 knob Fuzzes, and ## knob fuzzes like the Skyripper..
Also, mystery knobs are fun as hell! I really hate painting and labeling enclosures so half of my pedals have mystery controls that of course are "Highly interactive" muahaha. I've since gone back and labeled a lot of them with a sharpie just for the hell of it, but my Parallel Universe 2 from Experimentalists Anon. doesn't need knob labels.. I know what it does!

I like the rubber washer idea. Gonna try that on some pedals for home use.rustywire wrote:Larger the knob, easier it turns...although more motion is required to fully sweep from closed to open & back.Aghartha wrote:This is why I got rid of my Acapulco Gold! My trick for live has always been painters/masking tape over the knobs or just remove them all together. I've never drifted with them remove or taped down, but I also don't really adjust the pedal on the fly. Usually it's a volume or tone on the guitar thing for me.
If you remove them be aware of where you step because it hurts like hell in Chuck Tees when you miss step. But I don't get drift...

I generally ignore pedals with less than 4 knobs. The more the merrier imo!

Re: amount of knobs lounge
I'm a fan of MORE. But they do have to have solid functions. For instance, I don't want to have knobs for every component on the board. I like to have the controls I "need", which basically means I want as many controls as I can as long as they are all "useful".
Good example of a pedal with lots of knobs that's terrible:

Good example of a pedal with no knobs that's amazing (though, it does have trimpots):

Bottom line, it's entirely subjective to the pedal and each person's preferences. My preference is more-is-more, but I want knobs that actually do something and are clearly labelled.
