What gauge wire is usually used in wiring up effects?

I'm fond of 24, but have used a range from 20 to 26 AWG.

I literally use cannibalized CAT5 cable.. solid and stranded core. I use solid for the ground "bus" and stranded for everything else. The red handled Klein stripper from home depot ($11) will strip it and the solid core is also great for making jumpers on your boards.

I think you're correct, I got a huge pile of it from when my workplace redid the offices.
