The All Things Tape Thread

Post by Ruiner »

Repurposing this thread to discuss anything tape. Real tape delays, reel to reel, strange contraptions or techniques with tape, looping tape, lofi recording, playing 4 track recorders as an instrument, etc etc etc.

Really I just want a place to store all this stuff so i can find it again  but it'd be awesome if anyone has a similar love for all things tape would like to join in and contribute!

-----------------------------------------

This is really cool, i want one. Some similar creations out there and even products but i like the functionality of this. Eventually he's going to be creating a kickstarter once he has a 3d printed product based on this.

That's pretty cool - a guitar through that as a duet with some delay on top would be really fun. Thanks for posting :)

See also: Landscape HC-TT and Music Thing Modular Magnetophone...

The HC-TT is a lot of fun with tape loops...

This is amazing and total goals for me. I could sit there and do that for hours and be a happy man. Also, this guy is incredible with tape. Check out his YouTube channel and instagram for all sorts of crazy tape things.

I have a Tascam 388. Thought about selling it but recently decided to keep it for the time being, because my bandmate's face got so incredibly sad when I told him I was considering letting it go

It's gonna be slow-going, but I'll throw any progress reports of using it up here. :thumb:

I loved using tape to record. I'd still do it if I could.

ARRR I love me some tape. I used to work with a couple of Studer A820's (one 1/4", one 1/2") and a 1/4" A80 at work every day. Lining those machines up was such a dream, and they sounded incredible.
Nowadays I only use tape as a hobby and have tended towards the complete other end of the scale, crappy fostex 4track and even crappier microcassette.... something about nostalgia for being a kid I think. I also like committing takes to tape so I can't fuss over a mix for days on end, it feels a lot more free creatively.
Also i've been on a big cassette binge this year, as someone who has to listen to music 8 hours of the day for work I tend to get listening fatigue quite a lot, but I find with cassettes it doesn't happen. Which is lovely! Not sure I'd like cassettes for rock/metal style music though, but it makes synthetic sounds really come to life.

Agreed, i recently bought a tape deck and started collecting tapes solely to listen to at work. I would NOT want to listen to a rock/metal album on this medium. Ambient, noise, experimental, electronic music stuff sounds great on cassette IMO. The lofi quality and warmth adds a lot to specific styles of music. I love that i'm forced to listen to the whole thing if i don't want to fast forward through songs... it's almost freeing in a way in a music world full of so many choices and so easy to listen to 30 seconds of a song and move on without taking it in... especially taking in an entire album in one sitting rather than playlists.

^^ yeah! I've gone back to intricately knowing full length albums because of this, rather than being hypercritical and dismissive of every track.
