i have a bunch of cables that need a little R and R
and i just would rather make my own cables if i can make them well and then repair them easily. (mic cables, stereo cables, mono,)
cables are just way too expensive to buy new.
anyone know of a place that i can get good jacks and plugs / cable for good prices?

I use Neutrik plugs and Canare cable. You'll notice if you buy the best stuff, you'll still spend about $30 a cable (unless you buy in bulk), but if you compare it to cables you buy, they'd cost $50-100.

For cable, I use Canare GS-6, but it's a bit thick for patch cables. They make a smaller one, I think it's called GS-3, but I've never used it.
For patch cables, it's Canare L2E5. Much smaller. Has two wires inside, so you twist them together.
I also recently used a 4-wire Mic cable because it was the only one available in purple. ^_^
For plugs, I use the Neutrik 1/4" X Series. Straight. Right-Angle.
Heat shrink isn't really needed with these plugs. They really lock the cable down. I use it if I'm making the cable for someone else of if I'm just being picky with my own stuff. I didn't have any when I made my first cables, and I've never had one of mine short out.
You can get some (not sure what size-- smallest you can find, probably) and put it over the shield/ground. You can just use your soldering iron to shrink it (careful not to melt it).
For solder, I use MG Chemicals SN96 lead-free for basically everything. Leaded solder is cheaper and melts faster, though.
