Basically, (from what I understand) when the signal crosses the threshold, rather than flattening like if you were hard clipping, it kind of bounces back downwards.
From the manual of my favorite digital distortion: "Signals that exceed the threshold are “folded” around the threshold. There is
more sophisticated shaping at play here, but essentially this can change the perceived
frequency of the sound."

The Soundblox Pro is really in a class by itself, nothing comes close and I totally miss it, especially the octave modes. Definitely gonna replace it someday.
This is probably not exactly what you want, but if you like that kind of distortion, you might enjoy listening to this regardless.
Watch some demos of the Iron Ether Frantabit.
I had one for a while but the expression control was a bit wonky. (Apparently, I was not the only one who thought this as the new version has an adjustment for that).
It is a bit/sampler rate reducer, but has wave folder over. What I can't remember about it is how much fold you get without depth/rate reduction.

Eventually I want to build one of these. Waveshapers can sound really good on complex signals – especially percussion! A dry mix can add a lot of clarity. Maybe a wavefolder for guitar where the folding is modulated by a sine LFO run through its own wavefolder This is why I use Max haha
I have a pedal from Snazzy being built that does this. When I get it is beyond me but...eventually...

Befaco has the DIY kit for their Chopping Kinky module. Someone with a bit of technical finesse could probably convert it into pedal, no? With an envelope follower in there for the amount of wavefolding. And also a multimode filter.

It's going to be the tits. We're just not sure when it will be done . The dude released 5 modules this year so I know how busy he is.
Wave folding and shaping and multipliers are huge principles in SERGE systems (and Buchla). There are so many DIY resources for SERGE modules.
