Another 'How Do I Get This Sound' Thread

Bob is playing straight into an Epiphone Blues 30 Custom. I don't really want to rely on an Epiphone amp. What else in the sub-$1000 range can pull this off, preferably with reverb?

At the risk of being a turd...why are trying to find an expensive answer to a cheap question? There's the amp he's playing. You could probably note the settings. I think they cost like $300, there's probably a 1x12 version that's even less. You can always change out the tubes and speaker. I'm sure there are probably some well known mods for it if you want to uprgrade for the hell of it, but there's the amp making that sound you want to get. That's how you make that sound. That and a Strat with what looks like older Lace pickups and probably be Bob Mould to a certain extent.

It uses 5881/6L6 type tubes, so my first thought would be something like a Deville. Those can be had for really cheap pretty much anywhere off of Craigslist, but there's the reliability issue (likely the same thing you'd worry about with an Epiphone amp).

Maybe something like a Peavey Classic 30? Diff tubes (EL84) but similar ballpark in terms of gain options (2ch I think) and verb. :idk:

Honestly, the thought of putting any money into a decade old Epiphone amp seems risky. If there was a more sturdy/stable/reliable alternative, I'd be into it. My only amps have been beyond clean (solid state Fenders, vintage Ampegs and Sunns, Roland Cubes), so I'm not overly familiar with dirty amps. The Bob Mould lessons would help, for sure.

Yeah but do you have 5?

idk, just go ahead and find that Epiphone and spend some bucks in maintenance if it's needed, all tubes amps need this at some point anyways.

Like chank said, Peavey Classic 30 might to the job too, I really don't find anything "special" about that sound, which is awesome don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't go crazy looking for a specific modern amp that sounds like that Epiphone.

Oh and I'd say that a Strat is key to get that sound too.

Maybe not as helpful, but I get similar cranked-small-amp sounds with the Madbean flabulanche overdrive that I DIYed. Check out the demos on YouTube but note that you'll want the gain cranked and the compression added (it has a compression circuit built in to simulate power amp compression of signal) -- it's all meant to sound "tweed" ish but I'd say it sounds enough like this amp.

Also, mic choice and mic placement relative to your speaker will also determine whether you are closer or farther from this sound, too.
