Holowon?

Post by BossMann73 »

Anybody have a pedal by these guys? They have a cheap bass fuzz (static egg) that looks intriguing, but I don't know the first thing about the company and their web presence is pretty light.

AFAIK they are also the Syle. I have owned pedals under both monikers. The Syle Singularity was mostly disappointing. I preferred my Mini or an SD-1. I also had a Holowon Furr Fuzz and something else of theirs that the name escapes me. I didn't bond with either. I'm kind of a whore, though.

I've owned 2 different incarnations of the Static Egg, the first of which was purchased directly from the builder around '06-'07. My transaction with them was frustrating because my pedal looked nothing like their website photos at the time, i.e., was unpainted with marker labelling scrawled on it and a dented chassis. There was also cardboard inside the pedal that was either keeping the battery clip in place or shielding the vero board (I can't recall which). The pedal never caught fire and still sounded amazing throught my 8-12 month period of ownership.

My second Static Egg (purchased used) appears to be a post-The-Syle model with an additional fuzz control and seems solid enough, though the innards look a bit like an HCFX-golden-era Effector 13 build (complete with electrical tape wrapping). I considered selling it on 2 occasions, but ended the Reverb listing due to lack of interest and rediscovering something magical about its trademark reedy trumpet buzz. The Static Egg sounds similar to the fuzz side of the DOD FX52 Punkifier and Pelican NoiseWorks Half Horse.

Holowon's reputation has varied over the years, as there have been periods of non-communication and slow delivery of merchandise (as indicated in Reverb feedback). I'm actually watching some of their more recent painted items on Reverb, though may opt to buy used based on my prior experience with them.

Thanks for that. Told me just what I needed to know for the most part. i'll probably pass on it, although I don't have anything against the Effector 13 style build quality. Your stories about less-than-stellar customer service leaves me not wanting to persue.

Came in to say the same thing! Jared had or still has a bunch of their stuff.

It all seems really cool. I'm sure he'd love to talk about it.

Thanks Jwar, just waiting on the dude. After reading their feedback on Reverb though I probably am going to pass. Just one too many horror stores on there. Weird how a few bad reviews cancel out the many more good ones but there ya go.
