Roland boutiques and new SE-02

Looking at the Jx-03 and just saw they have the analog se-02 coming out. Anyone have any of the boutiques? What are your thoughts?

Way too small. I'm not a guy who complains about the size of volcas or minikeys, but I've played them in the store and found it annoying. People claim it's hard to dial in sounds again especially with the sliders. They do sound good though.

They make a distinction between the Boutique Legends (I think that's what they call it) and the Boutique Designer Series. Which means they are going to be coming out with more stuff. Roland has it's head up it's ass so they need to partner with others to come up with something cool. You know someone else like Malekko or Studio Electronics to say "Hey let's make this not look like lime green 90's cyberpunk movie prop, maybe?" So I'm excited to see what else is coming out of this series.

Also the SE-02 seems like a decent price, whereas all the other boutiques seem like they are $100 more costly (when you compare it to Korg or Arturia)

I have the JU-06 and JX-03. For $200-240 used, they're hard to beat. Add a little reverb or MIDI-chain them and you can enjoy some huge sounds. Some people don't like the small faders, but they don't bother me. If you want to do a lot of manual sweeps, then I could see why the small faders would be bothersome.

The SE-02 seems like a solid little synth, it's kind of in a different class from the other boutiques.
The others sound good, but are expensive for 4 voice digital synths. I like them, but I couldn't justify the purchase.

Nice. The JX-03 is on sale right now for $199 so I got one from Sweetwater with the 3 payments plan thing.

That's a tempting price. If they would have come out at that price, they would have given the Volcas a run for their money. You get a sequencer, great sounds, and knob per function, what's not to like? Post some clips when it arrives and let us know what you think first hand.

Also why did they put the pitch and mod strips on the desktop unit and not on the keyboard they also offered? They would have had room to scale the knobs and sliders larger. Plus it seems like weird placement if you're playing a keyboard.

No one mentioned the A-01 yet; the lofi 8-bit mono digital synth. It looked interesting, but seemed like it was dismissed because of a high initial price. Anyone play one of these yet?

The thing is with any of the AIRA engine stuff I've heard demos of (and have a System-1 here) is they're solid and easy to dial in, and make some stupid good sounds.

It'll never be *cheap* like you want, it's Roland. But...we're not talking about much here really, it's the price of a pedal for half this stuff!

I sold my JP-08 because it was too hard to coax a sound of it that wasn't an enormous pad or insanely 80's sounding. I want synths that are flexible and fun to use. Tiny sliders and poorly labelled sub-menus aren't fun to use.

It does sound REALLY good, though.

Agree with all sentiments except sound coaxing.

I've gotten mine to do some pretty wicked stuff in the bleep bloop vein and that is why I haven't gotten rid of it yet.

egg-xactly. I couldn't find a patch that didn't sound like a JP-08, if that makes sense?

For the factory stuff, I wouldn't be surprised that is what's in it.

Twisting knobs, even then I'd expect it to sound like what it is - sort of like how if I play a Muff-based fuzz, it sounds...like..

That's true and that jupiter quality is always somewhat present. It was just too overwhelming. The comparison to a big muff is very accurate in this sense, every time you hear it you know what it is. Which also part of why I don't like big muffs
