MXR Bass Distortion on guitar (Fuzzrocious content)?

Post by dotlikeimpact »

Anyone try the MXR M85 Bass Distortion on guitar? It was designed by Ryan from Fuzzrocious, and according to his post on TalkBass, it's mostly the same as a Cat/Rat Tail. Could be a cool, thick Rat style pedal?

From what I can tell, this pedal fell out of favor very quickly on TB, but then again so do most pedals over there so it might be great. Basically you just need to ask yourself if a clean blend is useful to you as a guitarist because that is the only feature this pedal sports which makes it anything other than a run of the mill distortion pedal. You could do a lot better than this if you're looking for a thick RAT style pedal. Idiotbox Landphil is one that comes to mind. Best RAT inspired pedal I've ever personally tried due to it's crushing low end and super defined clear top end.

I don't take TB popularity very seriously, it's even more faddish than TGP. I mean according to the designer, it's basically a Fuzzrocious Rat Tail with a clean blend (and a smaller enclosure), which is a known quantity (and one I happen to really like). I'm just curious if anyone has actually tried it on guitar? :idk:

It did not fall out of favour on TB. Lots of people got some and kept them. If you want something that sounds like a RT but will be a higher quality build, it could be useful.

If you want a better RAT pedal though, the Dunwich VoltThrower is in stock right now. Might be your best bet:

Zero experience with that pedlol, but I'm curious too. It's got a hefty price tag concidering there's plenty of even nicer boutique alternatives that hardly cost more :idk:
