You can get some real gated fuzz with the Metalzone->GE-7 with the mids scooped on both. Probably one of the most br00tal and intense fuzz tones I have come across.

I probably would have loved it a few years ago but they're like $90 now. This is not the pedals fault but the market. Cheap distortions should be cheap, shoot for $22 and some Arby's and go as high as (and this is pushing it) $39.99 but no bags of crisps. I say $39.99 cause you can get brand new stuff from Amazon and shipped to your door same day shipping at that price.

Yeah I agree. Paying more than $40 for a slightly buzzy non-true bypass dirt pedal in this day and age makes zero sense imo. Which is why I looked for ages until I got that HM-2, I simply refused to pay the kind of hyped up price they usually sell for.

Anyway, the fx59 I've got my eye on is for sale for not that much more than what I may be willing to spend. So I'm thinkin of just low balling it and see what happens.

I fully encourage that behavior. Works well for this sort of thing. I had no idea how reverb worked with payment so I always paid the second I bought something. People love this so I think that has helped (my buyer feedback with comments about fast payment) to get things for less. I don't know or care though. Basically I offer what I would pay for it knowing I will never see that money again. Most recent acquisition was a Boss Metalcore for $27.

I got this along with a slightly broken Metal Screamer and a couple jacked up multi fx for like $5 at a yard sale. Doesn't sound nearly as hair metal as I expected, actually pretty sludgy and fuzzy with the gain up, sorta like a higher gain Rat. I find myself using it for stoner/doom tones, mostly, though the kinda grungy built-in chorus makes for some decent post and shoegaze sounds, too.

Dope, I wondered how these compared to the Digital Metalizer considering they're the same idea. What jacked up multis did you get?

Don't even get me started on my cyclical HM-2 thought process...

Also throw in a couple of "I already have enough distortion pedals" and you pretty much have my day to day interior monologue. Never said I was rational.

From what I can tell from videos of the DM, the SS10 is not as "metal" and doesn't do that Boss skronk thing. It's fuzzier at higher gain settings and can do smoother, violin-type leads. Pretty sure it's just some version of their Fat Cat FC10, which was basically their Rat variant. Also, I just looked up the manual for the hell of it and learned that there are Chorus Speed and Width trimpots under the footswitch! I've had this thing for a few years and never popped open the switch before because I've always run it on a power supply. Sheeeeit. :picard:

One of the multis was a Digitech RP200 that didn't power up and the other was a Zoom something that acted like it was circuit bent. I *think* I gave them to a student who likes to work on electronics. The Metal Screamer just needed a new resistor and has worked perfectly since. Basically a slightly more balanced Tube Screamer (and the direct predecessor to the now "collectable" TS10, I believe), like it a lot better than most TS clones I've played. I laughed like hell when PGS included it in their "Worst Effects of the '80s" article. It even has the OG JRC4558 everyone fawns over in TS circuits and they're shitting on it without knowing anything about it. Even more amusing given how much of their business is selling TS clones.

A few years ago I snagged an HM-2 through an online ad. Made in Japan, looked like it has never been used, came in a wonderful looking original box with the instructions. Still have it and will keep it forever. Price paid: 55 EUR. Sometimes you only have to wait for the right opportunity.

The HM-2 belongs to the handful of dirt pedals that make my guitar sing.
