One more question... the card only have 1 1/4 balanced output. I don't have monitors. At the moment with my Audiophile 2496 I'm plugged to my stereo system amplifier with an RCA cable. Can I use a 1 1/4 to RCA cable to connect this interface to my stereo amplifier? I'm not sure since it's a balnaced output.
I guess that kind of cable would work even if it's balanced output??

Bump from the grave!
I'm looking to get a new laptop. The wife is going back to school and sharing a laptop is no longer going to work. It will be mostly for school stuff, but recording is always on my mind. What's cool? As an amateur at everything, I don't need much.
That would be able to handle most moderate recording endeavors. A lot has changed since I was selling laptops in a retail environment, but as far as things stood in 2014
-i5's were typically more stable than i7's, though obviously not as powerful
-hp and Toshiba were top sellers due to price and regular sales/specials but Lenovo is probably the highest quality mass produced PC right now. With hp and Toshiba you get molded plastic, most Lenovos are an aluminum/plastic hybrid. My wife's has survived many drops.
One thing to note if you play any games or video/photo editing whatsoever- rarely do hp's have any designated RAM for gpu processing. Toshiba seem to offer this in their lower end models. My AMD based 2012 model came with 512mb, and it's certainly noticeable. Helps with plugin gui and such.
All that to say, I switched to mac in 2014 and don't think I'll ever look back at Windows- so I have no idea what's up with windows based machine performance or manufacturer trends of late
Cool. Thanks for the help! I've been on macs since 2007 but feel kind of burned after my last MacBook Air. I see this computer as sort of a hold over... like buying a few years while I finish school before I go back to a nicer one, ideally a desktop when I don't have to be working in libraries and stuff all the time.

Ya we are going to be in the market for a new desktop largely for my music/recording and her photography. Not sure we want to spend for a Mac or not yet...trying to find some decent PCs that'll save us a little money.

I haven't been too impressed with mac's portable offerings since my early 2013 model. They are efficient machines, but you can no longer upgrade ram. I back up like crazy to keep the measly 250G SSD clean, but damn is SSD nice.
I'm hoping to get 10 years out of mine, but then I'll be going with whatever they offer in the iMac department.
Windows based laptops are a smarter buy in the portable realm currently, IMO
new imacs just released this week. if apple is what you're after imacs certainly provide more bang for buck but they're not cheap.
i prefer logic pro over anything i've used on a pc but mostly use my computer for games and upgraded my gpu takes precedent over having an imac that i sometimes fire up to record shit on.
Pretty much any modern gaming PC will make a fine recording platform - you'll have the hardware, you'll have system stability, you'll have I/O options.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.
I like the logic of pc for my cheap laptop that I'm considering as essentially disposable, then iMac when I'm done with this ridiculous full time school and full time work plus hours of bus commuting madness.

I had been sort of planning on the Mac mini, and might get one of those too, but I need something portable for this stage of life. I have two friends that have a Mac mini in their little garage studios and it's perfect.

Aye, most gaming laptops are good for audio. Focus on cpu and ram instead of gpu. And do yourself a favor and get at least a 7200 rpm hard drive. SSD if you can. Drive speed is frequently overlooked when looking into computer performance.
did some research on my current, still goodie but oldie (2008) MBP over the last couple weeks.
turns out you can double the ram past the original apple specs of 4gb.
needed a new hard drive too at some point (old drive was "unrepairable" but still functioning),
so i scooped an SSD (a lil extra dough, but in the grand scheme of what a new computer costs, pretty minimal)
....now i got my 8GB of RAM, and the SSD made everything super fast. feel like a just got a brand new laptop.
all for about $205 total ($50 for the ram, $150 for 500GB SSD, $5 for external usb/sata case)
i think the ram thing is pretty common thing as larger ram sticks become available than what was current at the time.
and getting a USB to SATA 2.5" external hd case for setting up the new hard drive made things way easier to clone/setup (~$5)
and way less stressful as i didn't have to take out my old hard drive, until my new one was all setup and tested.
thought i was gunna need a new computer in the next 2-3 years maybe if i was lucky..
.now i'm hoping i can get 5+ and technology will be way crazier by then.
