Acoustic Bass?

Post by Zack AKA Moose »

What are the up's and down's of an acoustic-electric bass? I have my electric bass that i love, but when i go on trips that are not for gigs
(church, school, etc) i hate having to carry my amp and all the cords. So i was looking at getting a cheap-ish acoustic-electric Dean bass. Anyone have any experience with acoustic basses? :?:

most suck and aren't really loud enough to be heard even over an acoustic guitar.
if you really want one.. find one with a BIG body or get a pignose bass amp to carry along to the country jamz.

+1

I have played them from cheapies like deans to Jay Hargreaves's $ 11,000 BLUEJAY [it was only 7K when I played one...] The ONLY the one that I have ever heard anyone EVER say work are the old Ernie Ball Earthwoods. They are all underpowered for their Freq range. A cheap Double Bass will out perform the best ABG any day at any time. I feel inless it is under $200 and you know it is a toy it is a waste of money.

To me acoustic means you should be able to perform with out a amp! I can keep up with a piano easy with a double bass, I can keep up with a drummer [if he plays in context] with a double bass, I can drown out a guitarist or two with a double bass, you can almost keep up with a guitar or two with a ABG.... think about it. Even a Washtup bass will crush a ABG in tone and volume outside of a practice situation unplugged.

They are a great way to get tendonitis and blisters on a drunken camping trip. Repeatedly.

I always thought they were kinda pointless, all the people I've seen using them ALWAYS plug them in aswell (and don't mic them up) which in my opinion kinda defeats the point of having an acoustic.
