Re: The Netflix Thread
I liked it (I watched both seasons in two days), and I don't usually like Aziz outside of Parks and Rec.
It was pretty good at telling the stories without getting too artsy or boring.
I'm confused about the end of the new season, though.

Definitely has that kind of slice-of-life sort of feel to it. I just started the second season last night, probably going to finish it later tonightDisarm D'arcy wrote:First season was bomb. I watched half an episode of this (where the guy babysits kids for an hour and decides kids are evil) and thought it was boring and predictable as fuck. Even Eric Wareheim was borderline annoying in there. Does it get better or is just not for me ?

Re: The Netflix Thread
Jr, finally finished DEAR WHITE PEOPLE. I liked it! I think the lesson I learned is Gabe is giant Soy Boy though. I mean c'mon, if every time I got in a heated argument at a party and someone called the police, I would be locked away forever. What a dweeb (the character, the actor was quite good! All of them were!). I enjoyed the structure and the photography was well done too.
Watching the directors cut of NYMPHOMANIAC now. I've seen it before but I've been craving later Von Trier lately. The Dir Cut does the movie more justice.

I've seen the first volume, but not the second. Love me some Von Trier, though!

Von Trier movies rule! I love how relentlessly pessimistic they are. Him and Michael Haneke and Bela Tarr are amoung my favorites (there are many more).

This is actually what originally turned me off to it. I tried to get through the first episode and just couldn't, but I'd definitely say it got better after that episode.oscillateur wrote:I watched half an episode of this (where the guy babysits kids for an hour and decides kids are evil) and thought it was boring and predictable as fuck. Agreed, it's possible they started with the weakest episode in the series.jrfox92 wrote:This is actually what originally turned me off to it. Re: The Netflix Thread
I've watched a few shows on Netflix over the last several months.
Breaking Bad (yes I waited this long to watch it, though I had seen some in the past)-probably the best series I've ever seen. Brilliant acting, great character development, entertaining, lots of actions, drama, comedy...etc.
Salem-started strong and end terrible. They fucked up bad on this one in the last season. I was utterly disappointed and cannot believe how they just threw in the towel on this show. Seemed like it was just a season to wrap shit up regardless of how well it went. Fucking sucked and ruined the whole goddamn thing.
Stranger Things-One of the most entertaining shows I've seen in a long time. This is one of my top and I've avoided it because of the rating on it, though it brought out massive amounts of nostalgia for me and made me fee like a kid again. Probably one of the coolest shows I've seen and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next two seasons.
13 Reasons Why- I watched two episodes and stopped. I asked my brother and wife what happens in it because honestly I couldn't do it. I cannot watch something that seems to glorify suicide, regardless of if that's the intent, that's what it appeared to do. The show is whinny, annoying, the acting is sub-par, and the story itself was pathetic. If you have any depression issues, avoid this bullshit at all costs. It's not something I think anyone should watch and from what I understand it's going to have a few more seasons.

Re: The Netflix Thread
It might be worth noting that I did not like the Office in my 20's and now that I'm in my mid 30's (God that's weird), it's more relevant and I'm loving it. It's fucking hilarious. I was 23 when it came on and I thought it was dumb as hell. I'm going to be 35 in July and it's just funnier now. I don't know why? Maybe it's because I've worked in Offices with weird dynamics and insane people since or experienced more, or my humor has changed?? Who knows. My wife and I watch it together and we laugh our asses off. I love Dwight. He's my favorite of everyone.

Re: The Netflix Thread
I know what you mean about 13 Reasons Why—I've avoided watching it because I was afraid I'd find it too depressing/disturbing/etc.
Interestingly enough though, I've heard several friends who've directly been affected by suicide say very good things about it. Apparently it's also been praised for addressing the kind of social media pressure and bullying that kids deal with today (which honestly terrifies me when I think about having kids). With that in mind, I do plan on bucking up and giving it a shot at some point...

I could see it being praised that way, but at the same time, it offers up more excuses for suicide to be an option and how to make it not seem like a bad thing to do. Let me know what you think. I was disgusted by it honestly.

Re: The Netflix Thread
It's good that a show addressed all the random cruel shit that really does happen to kids.
I don't think it's the show to watch if you're already terribly depressed, but I also kinda feel that if a show is what pushes you over the edge, then you were pretty much done anyway...
I didn't like any of the characters. Well, the main guy was okay. Listen to the fucking tapes instead of storming off every time you finish one, dude. And no high schoolers have that many tattoos.
It's not something to binge watch, the only tone it has is unrelenting dreariness. Every episode felt overly long to me and I was just waiting for it to be over with by the second half.
I think it's a good thing that someone made a popular show about such grim subject matter, and I believe that it could be useful for showing people who haven't had to deal with these sorts of issues a glimpse into it. But I didn't think it was that good of a show, viewing wise.
