New Nine Inch Nails single - "Discipline"

Post by lukasjudge »

Since I know every LOVED the last time I contributed to a NIN discussion :thumb:

A new NIN track called "Discipline" randomly got a bunch of radio play today.

It was apparently mastered by Alan Moulder...

...yesterday.

Trent also posted "two weeks" on nin.com yesterday. The last time he did that, he released "Ghosts I-IV". Here we go again.

BY THE WAY...

How the hell do you get that kind of vocal effect?... Is that just a manipulated tape delay or what?... Maybe it's multi-tracking, though?...

In the old days you had to put a delay in a mixer feedback loop and look for the sweetspot for a few hours to get that effect, I've been told

I've gotten exactly the same sound, even the sound when the effect is changed live, by:
making a feedback loop with my sound interface, standard channel two line-out to channel two instrument in (preamp, gain control). For software I just had a pitch shifter and added flanger or phaser to get the resonance.
Yep, that gives you delay, digital to analog to digital feedback loops are different than other fb's ;)
I have sound samples if someone doesen't believe it, hehe.

for serious, I'd like to hear that if you don't mind... I am completely clueless about how to work a mixer properly (I got mine from my sister with no manual and no prev. experience... not even sure if it has a fb loop on it... or if I'm making sense)

BTW: There needs to be a DE Gristlizer clone.... there really really does... It'd be especially BREWTLE if it were coupled with a grody fuzz.... THINK ABOUT THAT. there's a schematic PDF for the original effect which the Gristlizer's based on somewhere. There is supposed to be a clone released by Sirkut Electronics (seriously, I can't name-drop that shit enough....) but I have yet to actually see the results, though the guy probably has a lot of other things going on that hinders... stuff...

Also, the thought only just occured to me that I've been totally jacking this thread... "My bad".

Sure thing mister. It doesen't sound exactly right here because of the noise audio I used, but I swear it was right when I monitored it.
Wasn't using a mixer if that's what you're worried about, I was using that list of things I mentioned second. Was just parroting what a lecturer said about that effect in a class one day, how they used to sit for hours trying to get it that way, hehe.

As for mixer feedback, it depends how many outs you have. I'm sure someone here can explain it in better terms than me, but basically it's just putting one of the channel outs into a channel in. On a big mixing desk you get the most control by putting the feedback through where they use effect loops (I forgot the name). In my class we only learn how to use stuff the wrong way so the right terms aren't stuck in my head. Went through my notes to find something and it just had some weird lines in it telling me to use a doepfer line-in to a filter in some weird doodles of cable I made :(

ah, well, I'll just try messing around with it in a bit to see what I can do... either way, that clip sounds really awesome!

Thanks.

If anyone knows how, please feel free to post a little diagram of how to connect stuff!

Also, what crazy-awesome class is this you took?

Discussion running in this thread is awesome, but this new NIN track is not. Man..it just sounds so poor after listening to the gems on Ghost release.

Sorry for the hi-jacking, yes.
I'll just answer the last question and can't find a good picture to show how you make a feedback loop. Still, should be easy enough, output into input :poke:
The class is called Sonic Art, I'm in my first year working for a bachelor in two more years. I soon have an exhibition and shouldn't be on the internet at all

:(

I dig it. I'm a slave to Trent admittedly. But I really like it.
