CSIDMAN: Insight sought

Post by niftyprose »

Hi all,
I put the Csidman on my 'want' list at the time of release, then sidelined it as other delays with glitch/random functions reached the market. I'm going to lay out my hard-earned on one of these boxes in the next few months but notice that the Catalinbread glitching sounds better to my ears than (mostly FV-1-based) competition. Trouble is, I can't tell if it's really more organic, dynamic, responsive yadda yadda or it's just that I like high-ticket demos recorded by dudes with solid chops and conservative tastes. Can anyone with hands-on elucidate? I'd be prepared to bet that the Csidman is working its magic with unique hardware and a wholly original design approach but I'm aware of my own susceptibiility...
Best, NP.

I love glitch pedals and the CSIDMAN is one of the biggest disappointments I've had gear-wise. Uncontrollable in the bad sense of the word and far from 'organic'. It was rather unpleasant to listen to. It's a very harsh stutter/repeat, and if you're unlucky enough to set it to a setting that makes it self-oscillate, your ears are fucked, mate.

The harshness of the CSIDMAN is not easy to hear on youtube because of how they compress audio. If you've heard it in real life and still prefer that sound, the only negative thing left is that the controls are finicky and the line between usable sounds and that extremely loud and dangerous self-oscillation is a very thin line to walk. I had the same experience with the Bicycle Delay. There's a lot of range in those knobs, but they're too freaking small to be able to efficiently tweak them, but the pots are too close together to put bigger knobs on them. Good ideas with highly questionable implementations. If you want a 'set and forget' kind of pedal, then I guess it's okay, but to me, the beauty of glitch pedals in particular is interacting with them, and the CSIDMAN is the antithesis of that, imo.

For random LFO glitch, I'd get a Possessed. It isn't as harsh sounding, but still does the same things. Charlie Foxtrot is also an option, but it sounds way more filtered.

So, um, you didn't like it then? [heh heh]

Seriously, Kent, many thanks. Somerset, UK might be the home of MWFX.com but opportunities for hands-on with weird effects are generally limited. I like the *concept* of the Csidman very much but am prepared to pay attention if you tell me that the execution is flawed.

Agree with Dixie Queen. The Csid was incredibly harsh and the line between mild sauce to unbearable was essentially non-existent.

Considering recent trends, I imagine there will be a couple more challengers to the glitch throne in the coming year.

Just a guitar, a CSIDMAN and into a clean amp. Metal band. I can play drums.

Add a Metal Zone. $22 and you're BRUTAL.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

METAL ZONE GOES WHERE IT WANTS.

Just the other day, I woke up and one was crawling out of my butt.

Yeah, I think csidman is easily the worst glitch pedal and I've tried/owned almost all of them. Basically a delay pedal with a random glitch thrown in the delay line.

UC is right - if you want random go for a M.A.S.F. Possessed or an older Revolver.
