EQD Hoof vs. FH Great Wall?

Post by tchen »

so i just started getting into fuzz after a looooong time resistance to it (i know, i know)... just got an algal bloom which i like and am getting use too, but its not quite what i was expecting, though i dont know what i was expecting... i think maybe its a little tamer than i imagined, not that thats bad. anyway, my only other point of reference is a russian muff ive had forever. im still anxiously awaiting the day that the snowdrift shows up on the scene but am thinking about getting a new fuzz soon. perhaps something denser than the algal bloom and closer (though not exactly like) the russian muff i have.

how would you all compare the great wall and hoof... and maybe the arc flash? i know the hoof will be more explicitly muff territory, but any other thought on how these pedals compare and contrast? thanks!

tyler

ps- if anyone has one of these pedals they think id be interested in, i may have some other dirt to trade

I've never tried a Hoof, but I do have a Great Wall Dlx. I'd describe it as very thick and nasty (in a good way). The tone bypass option is really nice too. It sounds like a completely different pedal when you bypass the tone control. The gain & fuzz knobs are very responsive to each other as well. You can get so many sounds out of it. It can do a nice garage rock/doom/stoner fuzz tone and then it can go to a nice smooth overdriven sound if you roll the fuzz back or roll off on your guitar. The volt knob is also a nice thing to have, you can get some cool sputtery sounds when you mess with it. If you want a lot of versatility and a thick/heavy fuzz, then I highly recommend it!

And Tom has no problem making you a custom graphic or design for your enclosure for a little more.

So is the Great Wall the Muff-iest Fuzz Hugger pedal?

I had an black Russian Muff (maybe not a good pedal to compare) a long time ago, and that pedal had no balls whatsever. The GW is nice and beefy, and it has a nice amount of low-end. I've also tried a Big Muff Pi at GC, it didn't get as nasty as I wanted it to, the GW can do nasty, smooth, and everything in between.

The Arc Flash is badass, I'm a huge fan of it

The Great Wall is much beefier and more versatile than my Sanford and Sonny Bluebeard.
The Bluebeard sounds good for a Muff, but it’s still a Muff (Yawn)

The Deluxe is the way to go. It has one of the best tone controls available it’s range is from gobs of fat low end to bright biting fuzz. Then the bypass pushes it up into another level.
It is defiantly not a one trick pony

The Muff and variants are Kmart training bras The Great Wall is Victoria’s Secret.

I just heard sevensharpnine's demo on Youtube, and I'd say that the Great Wall Deluxe is more than capable of getting those sounds and then some. By having that tone control, you're pretty much able to do the exact same thing that the intensity knob is doing. Then you still can bypass the tone control, adjust the volt knob, and have two fuzz modes. I think it's well worth the money. There are just so many sounds you can get, I'm not saying not to try the SM, but I gurantee you'll have a lot of fun with the GW with all those controls.
