Behringer - Deepmind 6

Post by askashrub »

My interest in the 12 kind of cooled, but this might tip the scales for me.

Did anyone wind up picking up a 12?
I'm mostly curious about the quality of the keys, and whether the honeymoon phase wore off.
I fear that the menu system (even though I understand it's better than most) will still become too cumbersome to keep me inspired long term.

Just that keyboard has me excited, honestly.
~$700
Midi control + the synth itself.
That little bit at 4:42 sounded quite nice.
Definitely something I'll be looking at in the future.

Ask yourself, "Do I want a crappier version of a synth I already decided to pass on?"

Crappier? There are only two real feature differences, and it's 30% cheaper? That sounds like a great synth at that price to me :idk:

I'm pretty curious about the desktop version. I need to see if I can track one down irl and see what it's like to fiddle with.

Everything I see about the sound itself is that it sounds fantastic. It just seems to suffer from Behringer quality. $700 for a 6 voice poly-synth in this size is nothing to sneeze at. Someone on Muff pointed out this the same size as the Sub37 and maybe Behringer is now going after that market as well.

Yeah. CRAPPIER.

It's 3 octaves with half the voices. That's two significant disadvantages to its predecessor, which weakens its usefulness. Thus it's a crappier version of the previous model.

It's also cheaper and half the size. Not like they could shove all 12 voices in there easily and call it day. :idk:

Would you want a 37-key monotimbral synth with 12 voices anyway?

In what universe is the DM12 the crappier version of the DM6? It's got double the voices and more keys. It's the more expressive and more versatile instrument.

A cheaper price tag might make the DM6 more affordable, but it doesn't make it a better synth.

So your thesis is that the DeepMind 12 is crap, and thus half the voices and less keys = crappier?

I get Echorec's point: if you weren't interested in the full featured version, then why would you want the version with fewer features? For me I can see wanting the three octave keyboard and fewer voices for a lower price, because I wouldn't be as interested in having a keyboard that large and I would likely never use all 12 voices outside of unison modes. So, cutting $300 off the price of a synth and removing features that aren't terribly important to me would make me more interested in that synth :idk:

Yeah, saying the DeepMind 6 is the "crappier" version kinda assumes that the DeepMind 12 is "crappy" to begin with. :erm:
It's definitely weaker, but I wouldn't go as far as to relate comparable weakness to "crappiness".

I got his point as well, it was very clear :) But Behringer is obviously just expanding their line-up and target demographic with this synth. 300$ is many monies to a lot of people, and for those who was considering the DeepMind 12, but found it perhaps too expensive, this could very well tip the scale. So imo it's a clever move on Behringer's part.
You could view it as 'crappier' cause of the fewer voices and keys, or you could view it as better cause it's more portable and you can get a 6-voice analog poly for 700$. What other analog polys with keys are on the market today in this price range?
Minilogue. That's about it, and that only has 4 voices.
Besides, who's bashing the Juno 6, 60, 106, Alpha Junos, Korg Polysix, SCI Six-Trak, etc. for only being 6 voices?

Pretty much this. The cost for R&D here is to design the keyboard and enclosure for this. Otherwise, it's their flagship product in a smaller enclosure for cheaper to tip the scales for people who didn't want the size or didn't find the need for 12 voices. Standard business practices.

If God took away half your voice and made you shorter would you call yourself a crappier version? I wouldn't but I would still cost $300 less.
