There's some sort of delay in 6 out of the 10 available modes, and in some of them you can get a regular delay, but it's a very plain type of delay, you get the Pitchfactor for the wacky stuff if you are an ILFer =]

It's a pitch shifter, not an octaver. Pitch shifters have no tracking.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! I had a PS-2 years ago and it has definitely its own pitch shifting sound.

Anyway, obvious answer but the PS-3 is great too.

An octaver is not limited to a set number of octaves, nor is it only octave down
And while yes they are technically pitch shifting, they are not doing so in intervals/semitones/whatever, which seems to be the dividing line

Ehx pitch fork is tons of fun. Might not be what you need though.

The Pitchfactor is one of the pedals I own which I spent a good amount of time reading the manual when I got it. So many great sounds in there.

What do you mean ? An octaver is technically a pitch shifter that only does one (or two) octave down.

Pitch shifters work this way: record (sample) bits of the incoming signal (longer bits result in better quality) and repeat it at a higher or lower speed. Sounds more or less good. Results below the original signal normally sound better than the other way round. To achieve the octave up sound the signal will be repeated in double speed. That does sound equally silly if you do that with a long audio file, no matter if you work with an antique tape recorder or with a DAW. A pitch shifter is pretty much the same as a sampler. And the PS-2 is a lo-fi sampling machine.

Octavers work with trigger and flip-flop circuits or stuff like that (I'm no tech expert) to transform the input signal into some sort of rectangle waveform and the converted signal will be divided through 2 (and 4), thus resulting in accurate octaves (and other sub octaves) below the input signal. To use another example, since you're a synth fan as well: basically it's the same in organs and polyphonic string synths that have top octave signal generators for the 12 notes from c to b and octave dividers to enable oscillator sounds in all octaves.

thanks for the suggestions everyone! i have done some hardcore shopping this week and i'm on the verge of going bankrupt, soo for now i think i'll just use the ps2 as a pitch shifter with a separate delay after it. as soon as i have some money i'll actively begin my search though

As much as I love the Timebender, it doesn't sound much if anything like a PS2.

I had a PS2 for years back when it was the only stompbox 2 second delay out there (I got it when bleeding edge and stupid expensive).

Used the pitch shift mostly on vocal duties when recording.

The Timebender will do all sorts of delays, grand, clean, mean, etc.

The harmonizer actually tracks though and is thoroughly modern.
